A total of 116 Hysterectomy-Produced Colostrum-Deprived (HPCD) newborn piglets received immune substances orally and parenterally and survived to show a good growth rate. In their feces 3 days after birth, the count of bacteria was 10
10cells/g and that of Enterobacteriaceae organisms ranged from 10
6to 10
8cells/g. In contrast, 29 control HPCD piglets which had been fed artificial milk without immune substances died within 10 days after birth.
Escherichiacoliwas isolated as a practically pure culture from the brains of these dead animals, A mixture of 3 ml of gamma-globulin and 17 ml of artificial milk was given
per osimmediately after extirpation. At the same time 2 ml of gamma-globulin was injected subcutaneously. From 6 hours to 21 days after birth piglets were fed artificial milk containing serum powder. At 4 weeks of age the average gain in body weight was 3.13 to 3.35kg. The overall feed conversion varied from 1.29 to 1.39.
