A 10-month-old Akita bitch and a 13-month-old shepherd male were suffering from the malabsorption syndrome. Laboratory tests revealed mild anemia, hypoproteinemia, and hypocholesteremia. A serious insufficiency in pancreatic enzymes was suggested. No diabetic signs were noticed, but a hypofunction of sugar decomposition was exhibited.
Pathologically, the pancreas was highly atrophic with principal changes in acinar cells. These cells contained pale unclei and slightly basophilic cytoplasm. Islands of langerhans remained unchanged. Electron microscopy revealed the presence of multivesicular cells with specific morphology. Nothing abnormal was seen in the pancreatic ducts, blood vessels, or peripheral nerves.

Death occurred frequently among herons of a colony in Mimuro, Urawa, Saitama, over a period from 1975 to 1978. Salmonella typhimurium of the same biotype was detected from dead birds at a high frequency. This biotype was different from that isolated usually from human beings, swine, food, or river water in the recent years. It was concluded that S. typhimurium infection had broken out in this culony of herons.

Experimental hypocalcemia was induced in normal goats by intravenous administration with various concentrations of Na2-EDTA solution.
    1. Progressive depression of reflexes and body temperature, paresis, and cardiac arrest were observed in two groups administered with 4% and 8% EDTA, respectively. They were not observed within 240 minutes after administration with 2, 2.5, or 3% EDTA.
    2. The tissue calcium concentration was lower in all the goats which died after EDTA administration than in the normal one.
    3. The tissue calcium concentration became much lower in the cerebral cortex than in the rectus femoris muscle after EDTA administration.

Serum samples were collected from chickens of 53 layer flocks 40 to 500 days of age on 19 farms in Shimane Prefecture over a period from July to December, 1978. Antibodies against infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) were assayed on them by gel-precipitation and agglutination tests, respectively.
IBDV antibody was detected in 154 (30.6%) of 503 sera tested. The positive rate ranged from 0 to 100% among the flocks and from 3.3 to 49.5% in accordance with the advance in age. No IBDV antibody was detected on 2 of the 19 farms.
A total of 166 sera were selected from 30 flocks at random to include the same numbers of IBDV antibody positive and negative sera. When the positive rate of MS antigen was examined in them, it was 27.7%, varying from 0 to 73.3% with age. Positive sera were derived only from birds more than 101 days of age.
The MS antibody positive rate was about 2.7 times as high in the IBDV antibody positive sera as in the IBDV antibody negative sera.

A selfoscope, or an arthroscope for human use, made it possible to observe the membrana tympani of the dog, especially the loose portion of this membrane and the junction between the membrane and the wall of the external meatus. When it was applied to examination of the affected membrane, it could reveal hyperemia, hemorrhage, thickening, edema, and rupture of the membrane. It was also available for examination, diagnosis, and treatment of otitis media in dogs.
