In December, 1979 and July, 1980, the cutaneous fungal flora was investigated in horses of a stable where dermatophytosis was prevalent.
Trichophyton equinum and/or
Microsporum canis was detected at a frequency of 58.6 % from lesions of the skin. Dermatophytes of the two species were also cultured from 19.4 % and 12.8% of hair specimens collected from non-infested areas, respectively. These results indicated that
M. canis, as well as
T. equinum, was the causative agent of equine dermatophytosis in Japan. Moreover,
Aspergillus fungi, especially
A. glaucus spp., were detected rather extensively. Keratinophilic fungi were preferably isolated on mycosel agar (MSA; BBL Co.) and saprophytic fungi on potato-dextrose agar (PDA).
