In Kagoshima Prefecture, a total of 100 cattle died suddenly or were condemned after taking a recumbent position and suffering from pyrexia, anorexia, and nervous symptoms over a period from January, 1979, to May, 1982. Most of them were of the indigenous Japanese Black breed in the process of fattening, showed clinical manifestations at 7-12 months of age, and died or were condemned within a day or within 3 months after introduction into the farm.
Pathologically, thromboembolic meningoencephalomyelitis was characteristic. In addition, blood vascular degeneration, thrombosis, and formation of pyogenic foci were noticed in organs all over the body. A diagnosis of Haemophilus somnus infection was made in all the cattle affected.

In Saitama Prefecture, Campylobacter jejuni/coli was isolated from intestinal specimens from 48 of 51 pigs, 10 of 52 cattle and 38 of 108 dogs examined over a period of May, 1981, to March, 1983. The isolats were biotyped by Skirrow and Benjamin's method. As a result, 61 of 76 strains from pigs were C. coli, and all the 21 strains isolated from cattle and 102 of 116 strains from dogs C. jejuni biotype 1.
Of the enrichment media tested. modified BU 10 broth presented the best result in isolating C. jejuni/coli from intestinal specimens of dogs. When the same specimens were used, the positive rate of isolation with this broth was 2.3 tims as high as that with selective medium alone.

Escherichia coli strains, including toxigenic ones, isolated from piglets affectedwith neonatal colibacillosis and scours were all sensitive to gentamicin at an MIC ranging from 0.78to 3.13μg/ml when examined by the agar plate dillution method. The antibacterial power of gentamicin was stronger than that of ampicillin, kanamycin, or oxytetracycline and almost as strong as that of colistin. Judging from drug sensitivity, gentamicin was presumed to be effective against porcine colibacillosis.

A disease which could be diagnosed as inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) was found amonglaying hens examined at a diagnostic laboratory in Okayama over a period from August, 1976, to January, 1978. Hens 63-100 days old began to suffer from anemia. Hematocrit value was less than 20% in 90% of them. Death occurred within several days. Pathologically, adiposis was noticed in hepatic cells and bone marrow and atrophy in the lymphatic apparatus of the thymus and the bursa of Fabricius at a high frequency. Hepatic inclusion bodies were found in some cases.
Virus was isolated from the livers containing inclusion bodies and other organs. When a chicken kidney cell culture inoculated with it was stained with acridine orange-nucleic acid, it was confirmed to contain green inclusion bodies by fluorescent microscopy and adenovirus particles by electron microscopy. It was presumed that adenovirus might induce inclusion body hepatitis in lyaing hens, as well as in broilers.

A domestic female cat 12 years old infected with Dirofilaria immitis was examined clinically and pathologically. It had anorexia for a long time, suffering from dyspnea and cardiac murmur. It harbored microfilariae in the peripheral blood, as disclosed by the micro-capillary technique. It had ascites and died of uremia. Precipitin antibodies against D. immitis were demonstrated when tested by the gel diffusion technique with D. immitis antigen.
Postmortem examination reveraled that 4 (2male and 2 female) living adult worms were in the right ventricle. Main histopathological features were seen in the arteries, kidneys and liver. Light microscopy showd thickening and intimal proliferation of the pulmonary arteries and enlargement of the glomerular mesangium. The immunofluorescent test with anti-dog IgG serum was positive, as IgG was deposited in the glomerular basement membrane and mesangium.

Histopathological and electron microscopical studies were performed on plasma cell tumor in two cows. Visceral lymph nodes were yellowish in color and markedly enlarged at necropsy. Histologically, infiltration and proliferation of neoplastic cells were found in sinuses of the lymph nodes and blood and lymph vessels of the whole body. Occasionally, these cells were recognized in thrombi.
The noeplastic cells were round or ovoid in shape and their nuclei were located eccentircally. Multiple or giant nuclei or mitotic pictures were frequently seen. The rim of the cytoplasm was broad, basophilic and pyroninophilic. Cytoplasmic vesicles or vacuoles were frequently detected. Well-developed rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and occasional fibrillar sturctures were seen in the cytoplasm of the neoplastic cell under the electron microscope.
