Thiamphenicol glycinate hydrochloride (TP-G) was administered to 65 bull calves of a dairy suffering from infectious bronchitis and pneumonia.
    1. Of the calves, 92.3% recovered from the infectious diseases after three successive intravenous administrations of 3 doses of TP-G, containing 20 mg theiamphenicol (TP), 10 mg and 20 mg/kg of respectively.
2.Pasteurella multocida, Ureaplasma sp., andMycoplasma boviswere isolated from the pituita of 20, 11, and 8 calves. respectively, of 20 examined before administration of TP-G.
    3. Penicillin and TP had a strong antibacterial action onP. multocida. Macrolide antibiotics, tetracycline, and TP were highly effective againstM. bovis.
    4. No side-effects of TP-G were observed.
    5. TP-G was judged to be an effective agent against bacterial infections of the calf respiratory system.

Fifteen postpartum Holstein dairy cows biparous to sextiparous were divided into tow groups on the basis of the first estrus observed, group A (34±9 days) and group B (70±34 days). In group B, body weight decreased at 1 and 2 weeks of lactation but milk yield was higher than in group A, plasma glucose, vitamin A and carotenoid were lower in level than in group A throughout the period of investigation. NEFA, Acac and B-OHBA were higher than in group A in the early stage of lactation. Serum chloesterol and phospholipid had low levels in both groups 1 week after calving, but increased rapidly in group A thereafter.
The cows of group B showed ahigh milk yield and mobilized body reserves because of a negative energy balance in the early stage of lactation, tending to be ketotic. Therefore, they were rather late to exhibit the first estrus after parturition.

On the same dairy farm epizootic diarrhea broke out in December, 1982 and again in December the next year. In 1982, severe watery diarrhea occurred in 22 of 36 cows, which showed a sudden decrease in milk yield. In 1983, the same condition was noticed in 24 of 47 cows. Of the 22 cows affected with diarrhea in 1982, twelbe were again involved in the 1983 outbreak.
In both years, diarrhea disappeared within 3-6 days, cansing no death at all. Neither significant bacteria nor viruses were isolated from diarrheal feces.
HI antibody titer showed a significant increase to bovine corona virus in 10 of 27 cows examined in 1982 and in 6 of 10 cows examined in 1983. Of the 12 cows involved in the two outbreaks, 10 exhibited an average HI antibody titer of 1: 40-1: 557 in 1982 and 1: 30-1: 233 in 1983.

Staphylococcus hyicussubsp. hyicus was isolated in pure culture from the joints of two newborn piglets with arthritis and the lung and the stomach of a stillbirth in Torrori Prefecture during October, 1982 to January, 1983.
Arthritis broke out in piglets 2 or 3 days old of the same litter on two farms. Stillbirth occurred in a sow on another farm.
On these farms, S. hyicuswas also isolated from 17 of 21 swabs collected from the skin of dams.
In the cross agglutination test, three strains ofS. hyicusisolated from the three farms showed a remarkable cross reaction with one another, but a one-sided reaction to the reference strain of ATCC 11249. On the contrary, all the 23 strains isolated from these farms and the reference strain produced an identical precipitation line in the agar gel diffusion test.

In 1978, of 279 parturient sows 43 were involved in premature bitrh and stillbitrh. They had no clinical signs until parturition. Autopsy revealed scattered small gray foci in the kidney of 2 sow. Serum antibody titers to serovarcanicolawere higher than 1: 1000 in most of the 43 sows.
In 1982, of 49 parturient sows, 7 were involved in. They had no clinical signs until stillbirth, presenting scattered small gray foci primarily restricted to the kidney at autopsy. Their antibody titer was 1: 8192 to serovarhebdomadis.

A female Corriedale lamb 5 months of age manifested anorexia, pyrexia, nasal discharge and a rale in the lung. It showed leukocytosis (18, 000/mm3), an increase in GOT volume (142 KU) and decrease in total serum protein (4.4 g/dl). Yellowish white foci were disseminated in the kidney. The arcuate arteries were thickened. Dilation of the cardiac ventricles and hepatization in the lung were also seen. Polyarteritis nodosa was shown in the kidney, spleen, heart, lung, alimentary tract, and lymph nodes. Subendothelial fibrinoid deposition and infiltration of cells mainly composed of mononuclear cells in the media and adventitia were systemically observed in small to medium-sized muscular arteries. Infiltration of mononuclear cells was seen in the brain, reticulum and kidney. No cases of polyarteritis nodosa in sheep had never been reported in Japan.

Coxal dysplasia was seen in 25 calves showing a clinical evidence of inability to stand on their hind limbs. It was classified into 3 types according to morphological changes: acetabular dysplasia, coxal deformation, and dysplasia of the cotyloidcavity. Of these calves, eighteen were affected with Akabane disease. Congenital coxal dysplasia was considered to be one of the factors causing inability to stand in calves.
