    A study was performed to assess the effect of tolazoline as an antagonist to xylazine in clinical cases of cattle. Fifty-six cows were injected intravenously with 0.1 to 0.3mg/kg of xylazine. When they showed sternal recumbency following injection, they were subjected to such operations as castration, dehorning, and treatment of the hoof. All of them, except five which served as controls, were injected intravenously with 0.7 to 1.3mg/kg of tolazoline after operation. There was a marked reduction in standing time (time required for the animals to stand unaided) after xylazine injection in the animals injected with tolazoline than in the controls. Further, tolazoline depressed bradycardia, hypomotility, salivation and hyperglycemia induced by xylazine injection. No evident adverse reactions were seen in association with the administration of tolazoline. In conclusion, tolazoline could be used clinically as an antagonist of xylazine in cattle.

    Strongyloides infection was detected in six purebred dogs kept indoors, one papillon (No.1), three Yorkshire terriers (Nos. 2, 3, 5), one Miniature dachshund (No.4), and one Maltese dog (No.6). It caused diarrhea and delay in growth. Rhabditiform larvae were detected in the feces of these dogs and also parasitic females in the dog No.2. Fecal cultivation by Harada and Mori's method revealed filariform larvae and rhabditiform females and males.
    Two of three dogs inoculated with filariform larvae originated from dog No.5 were successfully infected. They passed rhabditiform larvae in the feces after a prepatent period of 14 and 20 days, respectively. Parasitic females obtained from the dogs by autopsy possessed very slender body (2.0-2.5 mm long and about 0.04 mm wide), filariform esophagus, straight running ovary, gradually tapering tail and blunt tail end.
    All the Strongyloides nematodes obtained from the six purebred dogs were identified as S. stercoralis by the morphology of parasitic females and other stages of worms and by the rhabditiform larvae passed in the feces.

    A “jack-stone” like urolith was removed surgically from the urinary bladder of a 6-year-old male German Shepherd dog suffering from hematuria for a long time.The silica composition in the projections and nucleus of the urolith was confirmed by chemical (gravimetric), infrared spectroscopic and X-ray fluorometric analysi. The dog had been fed a commercial dog food made in U.S.A. for about 5 years.This food was replaced by a new brand in 1983 and not available for analysis at that time.

    In H pasture highly tainted with Babesia obata (BO) four hygienic programs were conducted during a 6-year period from 1979. Satisfactory results were obtained as follows.
    In the first program, calves were grazed in a separate small padock, away from their mothers.
    In the second program were used anti-Babesia chemicals (B) and theilericidal chemicals (T).A T-B-T methos was adopted, with B used at the appearance of BO.
    In the third program a procedure was taken to kill ticks. The peak of appearance of young ticks was seen in the middle of September. Spraying was done in calves in the small padock. Clinical hematologyical examination revealed a decrease in the incidence of infection with BO.
    In the fourth program, farmers were trained in techniques of hygienic management and grazing.

    Suspensions prepared from papular lesion of a Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus) infected with contagious pustular dermatitis were inoculated intracutaneously in the lips of a calf and four goats. Macular, pustular, nodullar and papillary lesions develpoed in the order listed, and finally recovered.
    Cytoplasmic and intranuclear inclusions were found in degenerative prickle cells. Cytoplasmic inclusions consisted of viroplasm containing mature or immature viral particles. The viral particle had the structure and size of parapoxvirus. Intranuclear inclusions contained filamentous structures.

    A survey was conducted on respiratory diseases among introduced fattening pigs, by utilizing decoy pigs, on a large farm in Osaka from 1978 to 1979. Fattening pigs began to show severe respiratory signs soon after introduction and be condemned a week after introduction. The rate of condemnation reached 28.2% for the first three weeks of survey. Pleuropneumonia was observed in most of the decoy pigs. Many species of bacteria were isolated from the respiratory tract and Haemophilus (Actinobacillus) pleuropneumoniae was isolated purely from the lungs of some decoy pigs. The rate of condemnation was reduced to 10.1% in the fourth weeks of survey.
    Autopsy revealed bronchopneumonia and peribronchitis in some decoy pigs.
    Many strains of porcine enteroviruses, porcine parvoviruses and swine influenza viruses were isolated from the respiratory tracts of some decoy pigs.

    On a farm in Hokkaido knemidokoptic mange was seen in three bantams 3-4 years old in August, 1980. The legs were thickened with many nodes caused by the accumulation of crust. Mild perivascular cell infiltration and edema were seen in the reticular layer of the hyperplasitic dermis. All the developmental stages of Knemidokoptes mutans were detected in the crust. Female mites of the nymph stage were divided into a female protonymph and a pubescent female. No male mites of the nymph stage were observed. Detection rate of developmental stages in the crust was 47.4% in larvae, 23.8% in female protonymphs, 15.7% in ovigerous females, 10.0% in pubescent females and 3.1% in male adults.

    Hyperglycemia occurred in a male ring-tailed lemur in the Kobe Oji Zoo. Polyuria, glycosuria, and polydipsia were also noticed. Insulin therapy produced a clinical remission of hyperglycemia.
    A long-time diet control was required for treamtnet. Hyperglycemia was complicated with acute pancreatitis, presenting high values of amylase in blood serum (max 2190.9 SU) and urine (max 776.5 SU). Housing in a narrow cage and feeding with a total energy of 110.5 kcal/kg were suspected to be causative factors.
