Ultrasonic monitoring was made on the uterus and ovaries of 14 mares from parturition to the first functional luteal stage. The conception rate was investigated about 7 mares mated at the first postpartum estrus. The foal heat appeared 7-12 days after parturition in 9 of 14 mares and ovulation was seen 9-15 days after parturition in 12 mares while 22 and 35 days after parturition in the remaining 2 mares. With the estrous signs the ultrasonic image of the uterus cavity revealed prominent endometerial foldings with star-like layering of the folds during 3-7 days, which disappeared 1-2 days before ovulation. There were 5.2 follicles (1-3 cm in diameter) on average 3-4 days after parturition, and 1 or 2 of them attained 4.3-5.2 cm in diameter at the ovulation. Out of 7 mares 4 and 3 mares were successfully mated during and after the presence of the starlike layering of the folds image, and 3 mares were fertilized.
For establishing metabolic profile standards needed for diagnosis and control of production diseases in dairy cows in. Nagano prefecture, 1, 560 sera were examined for 27 biochemical items. Eleven items including total protein and blood urea nitrogen showed a regular distribution, while 14 items including total cholesterol and GOT a log-regular distribution. Two items of triglyceride and free fatty acid showed an irregular distribution even after logarithms exchange, Each item showed specific distribution pattern possibly due to lactation. Triglyceride was correlated with body condition score and post-delivery days, while alpha-globulin with quantity of lactation.
The mean values of catalase and superoxide dismutase activities of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cell lysate examined were ranged from 35.0 to 41.7 and from 76.7 to 125.7 units, respectively. The virulence of P. aeruginosa for mice did not correlate with the both enzyme activities.
A 7-month-old Percheron foal suffering from incoordination of the hind legs was pathologically examined. At necropsy, the cervical vertebrae were curved toward the right showing deformation in the seventh vertebra with costal process and transverse foramen in the left side. Histopathology revealed demyelination and macrophage infiltration in the white matter of the spinal cord, being similar to vertebral malformation in wobbler symptom.
Ultrasonographic monitoring revealed increased volume, enlarged medullary pyramids, and parenchymal increase and cortical decrease in echogenicity of the canine renal allografts. These alterations were detectable earlier after grafting than by the routine biochemistry.
Doppler sonography was applied to two cases of canine renal grafts, revealing transiently decreased diastolic flow in the main renal artery, which was detectable earlier than biochemical changes. The diastolic flow increased showing a normal pattern on the next day, but decreased with altered waveforms in several days.
Three cases of canine keratomycosis were reported. All the cases showed photophobia, epiphora and ulcers with grayish opacity but no hyphemia, hypopyon, anterior synechia, nor corneal vascularization. In case 1, a third eyelid flap was placed over the cornea, followed by topical administration of antibiotic and atropine ophthalmic ointments, however the corneal lesion became worse. Direct smear and culture of the corneal exudate detected Aspergillus fumigatus as the possible pathogenic agent. Therefore, topical nystatin and amphotericin B therapy was instituted, but no improvement was noted. In cases 2 and 3, the fungal elements were detected by the direct examination and Candida albicans was isolated by culture of the corneal scrapings. These 2 cases were recovered without scar formation by treating topically with pimaricin, FAD and 1% sodium-chondroitinsulfate-sol for a month or with pimaricin alone for two weeks.
Fumaric tiamulin (TM) and tetracyclines (TC) in pork meat were effectively detectable using chemiluminesence high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The supernatant of 10 mM Kp buffer solution was deproteinized with acetonitrile and injected onto Inertsil 300 C-8 (TM) or Inertsil ODS-2 culmn (TCs). TM and TC were eluted with 0.05% H3PO4/acetonitrile (77: 23) and 20mM NH4H2PO4·0.05% H3PO4/acetonitrile (83: 17), respectively, and they were derivatized with Ru (II)(bipy) 32+-S2O82- solution for chemiluminescence. The recovery rates of TM (5ng/g) and TC (5-15ng/g) added to pork meat were 98.5-103.8%, and the detection limits were 2.5-1.0ng/ml.
Swabs from fattening cattle feces (210 samples), carcasses (120 samples) and waste water (2 samples) at Shibaura slaughterhouse as well as those from meat and utensils (427 samples) at meat processing markets and plants were examined for Vero cytotoxin-producing. Escnericnia coli (VTEC) using sorbitol-IPA-bilesalts (SIB) agar. VTEC was isolated from 37 (17.6%) fecal samples but not from others. Using by antibody-coated latex praticle aggulutination and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), 4 and 30 isolates were shown to produce VT1 and VT2, respectively, while 3 isolates both VT1 and VT2. Predominant serotypes were O145: H-, O157: H7, O16: H21 and O74: H19.
