The bone development for 10 months after birth was investigated radiographically in Japanese Black beef cattle bred in Kagoshima. In 12 portions of the epiphysis monthly measured, the length of the epiphyseal line from a lateral view of the distal radius showed the most remarkable growth, while the groth rate was minimum in the distal metacarpal epiphysis from a lateral view. There were no significant differences between males and females. The epiphyseal growth rate was found to be variable depending on the ages in month, in contrast to their large weight gain during the growth period. The standard ossification of the cattle seemed to be similar to that of the horse, but the maturation speed was different from the horse depending on the part of the epiphysis.

During a period from autumn 1992 to through summer 1993 in the North-Eastern Chiba Prefecture, appeared a syndrome characterized by respiratory disorders in 1-to 5-month old piglets, and anorexia and fever in sows with abortion, and delivery of stillborne, mummified, premature or weakborne piglets. From the affected pigs on 8 farms, viral agents were isolated on swine alveolar macrophage cultures and identified as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus. The antigenicity of the virus was closely related to that of the American PRRS virus. The retrospective antibody survey of the virus by indirect immunofluorescence revealed an epizootic in this area in 1988.

In 1993 46.4% of test sera from Chiba Prefecture had antibody against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus and serological survey was retrospectively done with sera collected in 1988 when similar clinical signs were recorded in North-Eastern Chiba Prefecture. Antibody to PRRS virus was detected in sera collected in June 1988 from fattening pigs by indirect immunofluorescence. The decreases in the number of piglets weaned per sow were from 2.35 to 2.59 per year at the first outbreak in 1988.

Thirty-three healthy dogs were medicated with 1.50g/day of Sho-seiryu-to and 1.25g/day of Sho-fu-san, Touki-inshi or Sho-saiko-to, as chinese medicines, for a week, and the inhibitory effects on reactivity to histamine and mast-cell degranulation were evaluated by measuring skin wheal size at the injection site after intradermal injection with compound 48/80 or histamine phosphate. One week after medication, significant declines in these skin wheal sizes were observed with Touki-inshi (83.3%), Sho-saiko-to (77.4%) or Sho-seiryu-to (79.0%) in reaction to compound 48/80, and Sho-fu-san (75.6%), Sho-saiko-to (72.8%) or Sho-seryu-to (81.1%) in reaction to histamine phosphate. Blood cortisol concentrations were significantly higher after medication of Shosaiko-to and Sho-seiryu-to. These results are indicative of therapeutic effects of these 4 drugs to canine allergic dermatitis and pruritus.

Six SPF cats showing “lumbar paralysis” with abnormal gait of the hind limb, and dysstasia without pain were studied histopathologically. In the central nervous system lesions were characterized by spongy changes of myelin sheaths with vacuoles of varying size accompanied with infiltration of macrophages and plump reactive astrocytes and occasionally with secondary axonal degenaration. Degeneration of the white matter was present throughout the length of the spinal cord, more severely in the thoracic and lumbar levels than in the cervical level. The severity of lesions was proportional to the degree of ataxic conditions. There were perivascular cuffing of fat granule cells and astrogliosis in the brain white matter, which appeared mainly in non-ataxic cases.

A 4-year-old female Maltese suffering from rheumatoid arthritis was presented to our clinic because of acute cervical pain. Neurologic examination was normal. Myelogram disclosed marked swelling of the cervical spinal cord from the 2nd to 5th cervical vertebrae, and cerebrospinal fluid showed elevated protein content (194 mg/dl) and pleocytosis (800/μl, lymphocytes: 90%). Serum antibody to canine distemper virus (CDV) was 1: 1, 024. Corticosteroid treatment did not improve the clinical signs, and the dog was euthanatized on the 42 nd day of illness. Autopsy revealed severe granulomatous inflammation mainly localized in the cervical spinal cord, while CDV antigen or inclusions were not detectable.

In a 2-year-old spayed mixed breed dog with recent onset of urinary retention, a mass (150g, 80×80×65 mm) was detected in the caudal abdominal cavity by radiography and ultrasonography, which was excised surgically. Histopathology revealed that it was of canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT) arising from the uterine stump, and metastases to the external and internal iliac lymph nodes were observed, while there was no infiltration in the vulva, vestibul and vagina.

Contaminations of Toxocara spp. eggs in sandpits in Fujisawa city, Kanagawa Prefecture, were investigated five times from May 1993 to February 1994. The eggs were detected in 51.9% of 27 sandpits, and positive rate was much higher in the urban area than the rural area. The house dogs and cats living in these areas were examined for the fecal eggs by floatation method, revealing that the T. canis and T. cati were carried by 6.3% of 1, 042 dogs and 19.2% of 355 cats, respectively. There was no correlation between the contamination of sandpits and infection rate of Toxocara spp. in the house animals, suggesting that the major animals concerned might be stray cats.
