The uterine perfusates from 217 Holsteine cows after parturition were examined bacteriologically and cytologically. In cases showing more than 50 bacterial colonies/0.1ml, the conception rate (5.6%) was significantly lower. Cases with more than 70% neutrophils and those with less than 40% lymphocytes in inflammatory cells also showed lower conception rates of 27.6% and 37.9%, respectively.
A 3-years-old Holstein-Friesian dairy cow with skin leukosis was autopsied at 20 days after detection of skin lesions. Biochemical examination showed the elevation of LDH activities and α1-acid glycoprotein concentration. Antibody against bovine leukosis virus as negative and white blood cell count was 19, 400/μl with 93% lymphoid cells. Cutaneous tumors were seen almost on the whole body, and the surface and pelvic lymph nodes were remarkably enlarged. A white tumor mass in the peritoneum and a red-brown nodule on the urinary bladder mucosa were also observed. Microscopically, the epidermis showed slight hyperkeratosis. Lymphoid cells were remarkably proliferated in the dermis, and they were characterized by a round nucleus and basophilic or clear cytoplasm. Mitosis was frequent. Basophilic cells were proliferated in the perivascular areas.
Horses from Hokkaido, Aomori, Ishikawa, Kagoshima, Miyazaki (Misaki) and Okinawa (Yaeyama), and those imported from foreign countries were surveyed for leptospira antibodies. Antibodies to six serovars, Leptospira. interrogans serovars autumnalis, hebdomadis, australis, icterohaemorrhagiae, canicola and pyrogenes were detected in native horses in Japan, and antibody to L. Pomona was found in an imported horse. All horses examined were clinically normal showing no sign of leptospirosis, and serum BUN, GOT, GPT Total cholesterol, creatinine and glucose were within normal ranges.
Japanese Black and Hereford calves aged 7 to 21 days reared in a farm were examined for CD2, 4 and 8 antigens, surface immuno-globulin (SIg) of peripheral mononuclear cells (PMC), and plasma IgG. The numbers and percentages of SIg positive cells in PMC in Japanese Black calves were significantly less than those of Hereford, while there were no significant difference in T cell subsets, mitogen responses and IgG concentration between the two.
Urinary tract infection in 63 dogs and 41 cats were surveyed for breed, age and the presence of basal diseases, and the bacteria isolates from the urine were examined for antibiotic sensitivity. The infected cases were the most predominant in shih tzu breed, and more aged animals. No sex difference was seen in the dog. In cats however, many cases were under 2 years old, 70% cases were male. Twenty percent of thecanine and feline had basal diseases and many dogs had urinary calculi. From most canine and feline cases Enterobacteriaceae and gram positive cocci were isolated. Specific isolated from dogs and cats, were Streptococcus canis and Xantomonas spp., respectively. Most isolates were resistant to OTC, CEX, TP and KM but sensitive to orbifloxacin (OBFX), a new quinolon derivative.
Correlations between the accuracy of pulse oxymetry for pulse hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO2) and the changes of cardiopulmonary parameters during progressive hyoxemia and normovolemic anemia were investigated in splenectomized dogs. The difference between SpO2 and SaO2 [SpO2-SaO2] was correlated significantly to the pulse rate, heart rate, pulmonary arterial blood pressure, pulmonary arterial wedge pressure, pulmonary vascular resistance, arterial blood oxygen partial pressure, body temperature, and arterial blood oxygen saturation (SaO2), while not to hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration. Thus the accuracy of the pulse oxymetry can be affected by the hemodynamic effects resulting from hypoxemia, but accuracy might be acceptable even under severe anemia in case of hypoxic factors involved in minimum.
The primary culture of rat hepatocytes was exposed to chlorothalonil (TPN) for 24hr, and cytoxicity was evaluated by the 50% leakage of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). TPN was potent toxic agent among 8 pesticides tested; the rank order of cytotoxicity was oxine-cupper>TPN>fenitrothion (MEP)>diazinon> chlorpyrifos>trichlorfon (DEP)>asulam=simazin (CAT). Cell injury with marked decrease in cellular glutathione level induced by TPN was inhibited by treating with dithiothreitol.
Seventy-one female beef cattle aged 2 to 3 years, from a stock farm in Kanagawa Prefecture were examined between July 1993 and March 1994, and 59 (83.1%) were found to be densely infected with Cysticercus bovis. Worm bladders 1×1 to 11.5mm in size, in the muscles and organs were light gray to light brown in color. Parasitized sites were: heart (67/71; 94%), masseter (54/69; 78%), diaphragm (58/70; 83%), tongue (29/69; 42%), lung (28/69; 41%), liver (21/69; 30%), tail (19/69; 28%), and digestive tract (6/28; 21%). Among dressed carcasses, the incidence was highest in the shoulder (92%), followed by the thigh (82%), flank (74%), neck (69%), thoratic part (72%), lower thigh (54%), and rump (46%).
