A herpesvirus isolate from a crane with inclusion body disease was examined for pathogenicity for duck embryos, ducklings of 3 and 20 days of age and adult ducks. Nineteen of 20 duck embryos died 4 to 9 days after intraallantoic inoculation, showing hemorrhage and focal necroses in the liver, spleen, heart and skeletal muscles. Around necrotic and/or hemorrhagic foci basophilic and/or eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were detected in hepatocytes, cardiac and skeletal myocytes, neurocytes, vascular endothelial cells and macrophages. Six intramuscularly inoculated 3-day-olducklings died in 4 to 8 days with nervous symptoms, nonpurulent encephalomyelitis and focal necrosis in cardiac muscles. One of three 20-day-old duckllngs showed transient nervous symptoms and 2 birds had nonpurulent encephalomyelitis. No adult duck inoculated intramusculaly or intravenously showed any significant clinical signs nor lesions.

In swines, area under the curve (AUC) of a new quinolon derivative, orbifloxacin (OBFX)(5 mg/kg) administered by intramuscular and oral routes were almost the same. In the multiple-dose (5 mg/kg/day for 5 days) studies with swines and calves no acumulation was observed on the plasma level. In most tissues of swines and calves, the levels of OBFX were higher than the plasma levels after intramuscular administration. After intramuscular injection, the urinary recovery rates (0-72 hrs) of OBFX in swines and calves were 71.1 and 37.3%, respectiveley, while fecal recovery rates were 9.12 and 5.46%, respectively.

A Holstein steer (10-month-old, 290 kg) showed severe respiratory failure, decreased arterial blood PO2 (37.1 mmHg), respiratory acidosis (PCO2 88.0 mmHg) and increased compensatory HCO3- (41.8 mmol/L). The case was diagnosed histopathologically as diaphramatic muscular dystrophy.

One hundred and seventy-two healthy and 197 diseased dogs were examined for anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) by indirect immunofluorescence using feline kidney cell culture (CRFK). While all the healthy dogs showed ANA titers lower than 1: 40, some of the diseased dogs showed ANA titers of 1: 40 or higher; one of 8 cases with endocrine diseases, 1 case with systemic lupus erythematodes-like disease, 1 of 25 cases with immunemediated disease or allergy, 7 of 47 cases with neoplasia, 2 of 28 cases with bacterial or viral infection, 2 of 25 cases with parasitic infection, and 1 of 63 others. Strongly positive samples were also examined with other cell lines HmLu, MDCK and Hep 2, suggesting that there might be false negative cases using only a single cell line.

Four cats presented cutaneous horns on the foot pads, being located under the nails of torus carpalis and metacarpalis. All the cases had no common underlying diseases and were negative for FIV or FeLV. One of the four cases had a familial predisposition. Remarkably thickened stratum corneum and stratum spinosum were observed by histopathology. The present cases seemed to be differently characterized from those in FeLV-positive cats.

A 12-year-old female dog was shown to have spheroidal nodules on the mucosal surface of the urinary bladder by ultrasonography and a nodule at the anterior mediastinum by X-ray. Grossly, the urinary bladder wall was thickened with spheroidal nodules on the mucosal surface, and a grayish white tumor was detected at the anterior mediastinum. Histologically, the urinary bladder tumor consisted of the proliferation of atypical spindle cells stained red by Azan and was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. On the other hand, the tumor at the anterior mediastinum was consisted of epithelial cells forming Hassall's bodies and was diagnosed as thymoma.

The incidence of tenosynovitis of the gastrocnemius tendons was surveyed with11, 577, 331 broiler chickens inspected at a poultry processing plant in Iwate Prefecture during 2 years from June 1994 through May 1996. For the disease 24, 198 out of 6, 702, 013 (0.36%) chickens and 12, 140 out of 4, 875, 318 (0.25%) were condemned in the1st and2nd years, respectively. The incidence of0.1 million birds was calculated, revealing that the ratios of male to female were 1: 2.4 and 1: 2.0 in Cobb (CB) and Arbor Acres (AA) strains, respectively and that the ratio of CB to AA was 2.1: 1 in both broilers and breeding hens. Significant differences were recognized in the incidences among respective areas, farms, or poultry houses, but not in the seasonal incidence.
