Six-to 17-month-old Holstein heifers pastured during the period of May to October in 1995 in Iwate Prefecture, were subjected to evaluation of deworming effects of ivermectin (IVM). The prevalent nematode species were Ostertagia ostertage, Trichostrongylus sp., Cooperia sp., Strongyloides papillosus and Oesophagostomum sp. On days 28 and 60 of pasture, 29 of 44 heifers were treated with IVM (0.2mg/kg s.c.), and the remaining 15 remained untreated. In the treated heifers the egg counts of rectal feces were remarkably decreased after the first treatment. Weight gain during pasturing was significantly higher in the treated heifers than controls. In August, serum pepsinogen concentrations were significantly higher in controls, and from June to August serum albumin concentrations were significantly higher in the treated heifers than controls. Moreover, the treated heifers were able to be artificially inseminated about one month earlier than controls, and the costbenefit ratio of IVM treatment was caluculated to be 1: 1.52.

Ninety pair samples of morning and evening milk and blood plasma were collected from 7 dairy cows fed on various feeding systems after 4 weeks postpartum, and milk urea N (MUN) and blood metabolite levels as well as fat and protein concentrations in milk were determined. MUN levels were correlated with those of blood urea N (BUN). In milk samples with significantly lower or higher MUN, protein levels were lower. The milk protein levels were lower also in cases with lower plasma glucose levels. The declined levels of milk protein seemed to reflect eitherinsufficient intake of dietary protein (or nitrogen) or deficiency of available energy from the diets. Milk fat levels were not significantly correlated with MUN or plasma metabolite levels.

A 15-day-old female calf complaining urinary obstruction and hematuria, was diagnosed as bladder rupture by positive-contrast cystography and ultrasonography. Through a posterior ventral midline incision one third of bladder containing ruptured devitalized tissue was debrided, resulting in recovery after operation. The case was suspected to be due to urachal anomaly type 2, a vesicourachal diverticulum.

Nearly 4, 400 nucleotides encoding the spike protein of canine coronavirus (CCV), strain 5821, were determined for the sequences of the 5'- end, middle and 3'- end regions, and the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences were compared with those of CCV strains, INSAV C-1 and K378 and of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) virus strains, KU-2 and 79-1146. The nucleotide sequences of the 3'- end and middle regions of the gene were highly conserved in all the CCV strains examined, resembling those of the FIPV 79-1146 strain. The CCV 5821 strain showed the 5'- end nucleotide sequence, which were more similar to that of the FIP strain 79-1146 than other strains of CCV.

An approximately 10-year-old female Duchsfund showing weakness and syncope during exercise or excitement, was diagnosed as bradycardia-tachycardia syndrome (BTS) on electrocardiogram. The dog suddenly died 3 months later, regardless of exercise restriction, and histopathology revealed remarkable atrophy of the cardiac sinus node with decreased number of nodal cells and fibrosis within and around the atrophied sinus node. The interruption of contiguity between the sinus node and the right atrial myocardium might be related with the occurrence of BTS.

An 8-year-old female Rottweiler dog with anorexia, depression and the left hindimb lameness, showed groundglass shadows in the cranial peritoneal cavity and caudal disposition of the intestinal gas content by abdominal radiography. Remarkable splenomegaly with various-sized round hypoecho areas were observed by abdominal ultrasonography. Laparotomy revealed accumulation of bloody fluid in the peritoneal cavity and remarkable splenomegaly with multiple grayish-white nodules variable in size and partly hemorrhagic, and splenectomy was performed. Histopathology of the spleen revealed malignant histiocytosis characterized by disappearance of the normal structure, invasive proliferation of atypical histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells, frequent mitosis, erythrophagocytosis. At 18 days postoperation, hepatomegaly and a nodular lesion in the right cranial lung lobe were detected by radiography and at 4 weeks postoperation, several nodular lesions appeared in the cervical and abdominal skin. Taking a turn for the worse later, the patient died at 36 days postoperation.

Questionaires were addressed to alone lived old men to see their consciousness for owning the dog and cat. Some mental effects of raising animals were confessed by 76% of the objects, and 70.2% answered that the animals were regarded as their own children or friends. However, only a few owners were conscious that their own dogs might trouble the others in some cases.
