Nine cases of congenital abnormalities were observed from December1998 to May1999 in Ishikawa Prefec-ture. One was a case of stillbirth, three were cases of arthrogryposis, and two were instances of weak consti-tution. Three cases of hydranencephaly occurred from March to May during the latter phase of this epidem-ic. Six strains of Akabane virus (AKV) were isolated from serum and blood cell samples taken from six sen-tinel cattle. Cross-neutralizing tests showed these isolates to be identically antigenic to the JaGAr39, OBE-1, and NBE-9 strains of AKV but to be antigenically more distant from the Iriki strain of AKV. Comparisons of genetic properties of23 strains of AKV as determined by phylogenetic analysis of the S RNA sequence showed the isolates to belong to the cluster including the JaGAr39, OBE-1, and NBE-9 strains and to be similar to strains isolated in1988 and1989 in Nagasaki and Okinawa Prefectures.

Endoscopic examination of the upper respiratory tracts of 1, 008 thoroughbred racehorses clinically observed to cough or breathe noisily revealed high percentages of abnormal conformation of the epiglottis, pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia, elevation of the soft palate, dorsal displacement of the soft palate, and laryngeal hemi-plegia. These disorders were accompanied by complications in many of the horses and were more prevalent in young horses.

Field trials were carried out to prove both the safety and the efficacy of a formalin-inactivated, oil-adjuvant-ed bovine coronavirus vaccine (BCV). The vaccine was prepared from BCV-infected cells solubilized with Tri-ton X-100 and mixed with an oil adjuvant. Eighty cattle, including38 pregnant Holstein-Friesian and F1, breeds, 1-6 months to 2-9 years of age, received2 intramuscular doses (2mleach) of the vaccine at 3-week inter-vals. Twenty other cattle were non-vaccinated controls. No adverse effects of vaccination on clinical manifes-tations and milk production were observed. Cows vaccinated during pregnancy gave birth to healthy calves in term. Vaccinated cattle developed high hemagglutination-inhibiting (HI) antibody titers, and the antibody lev-els thus attained persisted for 9 months. The geometric mean of HI antibody titers was 1: 54.1 at initial admin-istration. Three weeks later, the HI antibody titer rose to 1: 120.2 and reached a peak titer of 1: 674.2 1 month after the second administration. Nine months after the second administration, the HI antibody titer was 1: 180.6, indicating persistence of a relatively high-titered antibody. The field studies involved in this study prove the vaccine to be both safe and effective.

In recent years, to diagnose laryngeal hemiplegia in thoroughbred horses, endoscopic examinations of the upper respiratory tract have been performed while the animal is exercising on a treadmill, as well as during periods of rest. Measurements of tracheal pressure during exercise are useful in assessing tracheal obstruc-tion. The present study showed that tracheal-pressure measurements made during treadmill exercise can assess tracheal obstruction arising from laryngeal hemiplegia and therefore are a useful diagnostic guide.

Histopathological evaluations of testicular tumors in7 cats showed3 of them to be seminomas, 3 to be interstitial cell tumors, and1 to be teratoma. Gross pathological and histological findings were similar to those obtained from dogs. Two of the7 tumors (one case of interstitial cell tumor and one of teratoma) develeped in cryptorchism. Surgery was performed on the animals, 3 of which died within 2 years from other causes. All traces of2 were lost, and2 are still living. Since these cases are too few to permit definite conclusions, further investigation is required to clarify the biological behavior of these tumors.

Among103 dogs examined for demodex infection, in a 3-year-old Yorkshire terrier, we detected dual infection with a short-bodied demodex mite andDemodex canis. The unidentified short-bodied demodex mites were 97.5-167.5 (139)μm in body length. The podosoma was 55-100 (mean=82.88)μm, and the blunt-ended opisthosoma was 40-67.5 (mean=56.38)μm. Skin lesions took the form of scaly dermatitis with patches of pustules around the ears, eyes, lips, chin and legs. The dog was treated with ivermectin and bathed in Benzol peroxide, micronized sulfur solution, and Amitraz biweekly. But, since after 3 months, tests for demodex mites remained positive and skin conditions had not improved, all the dog's hair was cut off. Milbemycin was administered, and the dog was bathed once weekly in the medicines mentioned above. As a result of this treatment, after 2 months, tests for demodex mites became negative; and clinical symptoms disappeared.

In-vivo, direct-preparation examinations were conducted on chromosomes from tumor cells of the multicentric type (10), the alimentary type (6), and the thymic type (2), all of which had been diagnosed as porcine lymphosarcoma. The multicentric types were classified as normal (3), nonclonal abnormal (1), and clonal abnormal (6-1 addition type, 2 translocation types, 1 partial addition type, and 1 translocational/multiple type). The alimentary types were classified as 4 nonclonal types and 2 clonal abnormal types (1 deletion type and1 multiple type). The thymic types were classified as 2 clonal types (1 duplication of the addition and partial addition type and 1 translocation partial deletion type). Although no chromosomal abnormality agreeing with anatomical classification was found, apparently, while chromosomal abnormality occurs before and during transformation to the next chromosomal type, clonal abnormal cells repeat division and development. These clonal chromosomal abnormalities may be connected with acute change and transformation. Chromosome examination is therefore expected to become a useful aid in diagnosing and classifying lymphosarcoma.
