Histories, clinical signs, and clinical findings of 108 dairy cattle clinically suspected of having bacterial endocarditis (BE)(66 cases of BE and 42 cases without BE) were investigated. Significant clinical findings in cases of BE were positive jugular pulsation, distended jugular vein, cardiac murmurs, pounding heart sounds, and persistent tachycardia. Even more significant was the suggestion that persistent tachycardia unattributable to fever is both an important finding and a helpful diagnostic clue to early BE. Cattle with BE had significant past or present histories of arthritis and abortion. There were no marked differences in laboratory findings between cases with and cases without BE. Increased amplitudes of P, QRS, and T electrocardiographic waves were not always characteristic of BE.

Cytological, endocrinological, and histological analyses of a Japanese Black calf with abnormal external genitalia revealed sex-chromosome chimerism in the karyotype. In the PMSG-hCG administration test, the calf remained low in both estradiol-17β and progesterone concentrations, although both hormones increased in a normal control female calf. Necropsy showed male-like internal genitalia. Histological examination, however, revealed no spermatogenesis. On the basis of these findings, we determined this calf to be a single-birth freemartin.

In recent years, skin disease with body-wide alopecia or marked lichenification has been observed in Ryukyu wild boars (Sus scrofa riukivanus) living on Amami-Oshima island. Sarcoptic mange mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) have been detected from skin lesions on diseased animals. The disease was first detected in 1978 in Setouchicho on Amami-Oshima. It has since become widespread. The wild boars are thought to have been infected by feral Amami-Oshima pigs, on which sarcoptic mange mites have been detected.

An underdeveloped Japanese Black calf suffered severe heart failure. Increased heart rate, plasma catecholamine, ventricular extra-systole, left ventricular enlargement, and decreased left ventricular fractional shortening suggested dilated cardiomyopathy.

Complementary DNA for the canine quaking gene (Cqk) and the feline quaking gene (Fqk), which are homologous with mouse qkl, were isolated and their nucleotide sequences were determined. At the nucleotide level, sequence data for Cqk showed very high homology (95.4%) with mouse qkl. The corresponding value for Fqk was 96.7%. Deduced amino-acid sequences for Cqk and Fqk matched that of mouse qkI perfectly. These findings suggest that the quaking-gene family is highly conserved during mammalian evolution and that Cqk and Fqk are likely to fulfill important biological functions in dogs and cats, too.

Prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and plasma fibrinogen concentration (pfg) were measured to evaluate the usefulness of a dry-system coagulation analyzer (DRY method) to detect canine blood coagulopathy. The samples were plasma treated with 3.2% sodium citrate. A wet-system coagulometer (WET method) was used for PT and APTT assays of 30 abnormal samples with prolonged PT and/or APPT. The WET method was also used to determine the pfg of 15 abnormally high or low samples. Values for PT (r=0.675), APTT (r=0.551), and pfg (r=0.945) obtained with the DRY method correlated well with those obtained with the WET method (P<0.0001). The DRY method detected prolongation in all PT samples and in 29 APTT samples but failed to detect abnormalities of 10 samples with low pfg that the WET method did detect. Variation of coefficients in the DRY method ranged from 2.0 to 5.2% in the intra-assay of each measurement, indicating a high degree of precision.

Clinical chemistry tests made the second day after ovario-hysterectomy for pyometra in a mongrel bitch (age 10 years and 4 months) revealed an elevated serum-ALP level. Abdominal radiographs showed the gallbladder to be dilated and calcified. Ultrasonic examination of the gallbladder showed its cystic wall to be hyperechoic and to be accompanied by an acoustic shadow. This led to the suspicion that the gallbladder had lost the ability to contract. On the basis of typical radiographic and ulstrasonographic findings, we diagnosed this to be a case of porcelain gallbladder. With the passage of time, infectious cholecystitis occurring when the animal was 4 years and 6 months may have become chronic. Significant calcification of the gallbladder walls seems to have been caused by chronic cholecystitis.

Campylobacterspp. were isolated from the bile of 24 (51.0%) and the cecal contents of 2 (4.2%) of 47 beef cattle. Of the 24 heads in which the organisms were discovered in the bile, C. jejuni was isolated in 20, C. coliin 1, C. fetus in 1, C. lari in 1, and both C. fetus and C. lari in 1. Of the 2 heads harboring the organisms in the cecal contents, C. jejuni was isolated in one and C. fetus in the other. We divided the 20 strains of C. jejuni isolated from bile samples into Penner's serogroup D (12), B (2), R (2), F (1), and unknown (3). C. jejuni isolated from the cecal contents of 1 animal was serogroup R. These results indicate that bile contamination of edible organs during meat processing is a serious concern from the standpoint of meat hygiene.
