During the period from June through September, 1988, a helminthological survey on the basis of fecal examination was conducted on 149 racehorses reared at either the Ohi Racecourse (Tokyo) or the Kobayashi Stable (Chiba Prefecture). Helminth eggs were detected at a high rate of 94.0% in the horses examined: strongyle eggs (91.9%), tapeworm eggs (31.5%), and Parascaris eggs (7.4%). No pinworm eggs, however, were discovered (0/73). Extremely high EPG value (1, 001-4, 000) were observed in 15.3% of strongyle infection of the horses. The EPG value tended to be higher in younger horses: 28.9% at 2 years of age, 13.3% at 3 years, 9.1% at 4 years, and 5.0% at 5 years.

A partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection was observed in a 98-day-old female Holstein-Japanese Black crossbred calf. The caudal-lobe pulmonary veins of the left lung united to form a common venous trunk at the lung hilus. The common trunk was anomalously connected to the left azygos vein by way of the coronary sinus. The cranial-lobe pulmonary vein and right pulmonary veins were connected to the left atrium in the usual manner. Pronounced dilations were noted in the right atrium and ventricle and mild dilation in the pulmonary trunk. The only thing on the atrial septum was a large patent foramen ovale without associated atrial septal defects.

A 4-year-old, female, Maltese dog with chronic diarrhea showed severe hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, and hypocalcemia. Endoscopy revealed severe edema in the duodenal mucosa. Histopathological examination of the duodenal mucosa by endoscopic biopsy revealed lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis with mild lymphangiectasia. On the basis of these findings, we diagnosed this case as protein-losing enteropathy secondary to enteritis. The dog was initially treated with prednisolone-based therapy; but because of elevated hepatic enzyme activity, the dose of prednisolone was tapered off. The potent immunosuppressive agents tacrolimus, azathioprine, and cyclosporin were then concomitantly administered with prednisolone. Cyclosporin produced more favorable results than any of the other immunosuppressive agents.

We examined levels of the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) in a cat with fibrosarcoma that repeatedly recurred with progressive malignancy over a short period. TGF-β1 increased in both sera and exudates in the tumor mass. The TGF-β1 in sera increased with the progression of histological malignancy. Moreover, the correlation coefficient between tumor size and production of TGF-β1 in sera and tumor exudates was high. These findings suggest that TGF-β1 is produced at tumor sites and that mass size and histological malignancy are associated with its increased production.

Electrocardiograms of a 6-year-old male Chesapeake Bay Retriever with a history of depression and anorexia revealed critical bradycardia, and disassociation of P waves (166 beats/min) and QRS complexes (20beats/min). Antiarrythmic medical therapy had no effect, and echocardiograms revealed normal myocardial contractility. From these findings, we diagnosed the dog as having a third-degree atrioventricular block. The animal was anesthetized, and a permanent artificial epicardial WI pacemaker was implanted under temporary transvenous endocardial pacing. Anesthetic and postoperative recovery was uneventful, and clinical signs improved immediately. Twelve months after the implantation, the patient was doing well with no clinical signs and no medication. This case suggests that the risk involved in general anesthesia for implantation due to bradycardia can be avoided by means of temporary transvenous endocardial pacing.

Uterine tumors in 16 sows (aged from 2 to 4 years) at a slaughterhouse were investigated macroscopically, histopathologically, and immunohistochemically. Located mainly in the uterine horn, tumors were solitary in 9 cases and multiple in 7 cases. In histological terms, they were composed of whirling and interlacing bundles of neoplastic cells with nuclei that were oval or elongated-oval with blunt, rounded ends. Since they were positive for desmin and of -smooth muscle actin in all cases and for vimentin in 13 of 15 cases (87%), the neoplastic cells were thought to be of smooth-muscle origin. In one case, 4 to 5 mitotic figures per 10 high-power magnification fields (X400) were detected; but mitotic activity was low in all other cases. The positive reaction rate of proliferating cell-nuclear antigen (PCNA) ranged from 0 to 85%. Paucity of mitoses and absence of metastasis indicated that the neoplasms were benign.

Histopathological examination revealed multiple white nodules on the myocardium and diaphragm of a sick head of Japanese Black cattle at a slaughterhouse to consist of many tiny abscesses containing gram-negative bacteria. The ID test H/N Rapid identified the organism as Histophilus somni (Haemophilus somnus). The 16S rDNA sequence of the organism taken from the abscesses demonstrated 97% homology with that of H. somnus. Immunostaining with the H. somni antiserum detected the H. somni antigen in degenerated neutrophils within the abscesses. These results confirmed the diagnosis of myocardial and diaphragmatic abscesses cased by H. somni.
