Wax-teat bougie (A), silicone cannula (B) and cutgut-teat dilator (C) were placed into the teat canal (TC) for three days or nine days in eight non-lactating Holstein cows. In four other lactating cows, A and B inserts were placed for seven days. The teats were examined by theloscopy at intervals of three days in the non-lactating cows. At necropsy, the teat samples were collected from both the non-lactating and lactating cows for histopathology. Theloscopically, luminal dilation, desquamation of the horney layer, hemorrhage of the teat canal, submucosal hemorrhage and roughing of the Fürstenberg's rosette (FR) were observed in the teats administered with B and C inserts. The histopathological features in those lesions included mucoepithelial necrosis, leukocytic infiltration and fibrosis in the TC and FR. However, most teats administered with the A insert showed only a mild infiltration of lymphocytes in the TC and FR, suggesting that the A insert has less inflammatory information than the B and C inserts. The results of the present study suggest that the A insert is less irritative for the normal bovine teat canal.

A 35-day-old calf on a dairy farm in Hiroshima Prefecture died after showing respiratory disorder and swelling of joints. A bacteriological and histopathological examination revealed systemic infection and vegetative endocarditis caused by Pasteurella multocida A:1 (Carter's capsular type A : Heddleston's somatic type 1), showing atypical biochemical characteristics, i.e., positive acid production from lactose and positive hydration of o-nitrophenyl-β-D-galactocpyranoside. This is the first report of bovine septicemia caused by P. multocida A:1.

On an institution raising copper pheasants (Syrmaticus soemmerringii) and common pheasants (Phasianus versicolor), with about 20 adult birds of each species, the hatchability of their eggs and the survival rate of poults to four days of age decreased markedly in the breeding season between March and June of 2009. The ingredients of feed for the adult birds in 2009 were different from those in previous years. Most of the poults developed leg weakness immediately after hatching. The histological changes of eight affected poults were characterized by hyalinous degeneration with subsequent regenerative changes of the breast and leg skeletal muscles. Feeding experiments with both species of 12 adult birds each disclosed an insufficient supply of selenium to both adult species in 2009 compared with the previous year.

A 3-year-old male Maltese weighing 2.5 kg presented with a two-day history of vomiting and anuria that had begun five hours after ingesting seedless grapes. On blood examination, severe azotemia, hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, hyperkalemia, and mild elevation of plasma hepatic enzymes were detected. Treatment using diuretics, dopamine, and fluid administration was continued for three days but the dog died with anuria four days after the ingestion. Histopathological examination of the kidney showed severe necrosis and degeneration of the epithelial cells of the proximal tubes. From these clinical and histopathological findings, we concluded that the cause of this poisoning was a grape.

Total laryngectomy and permanent tracheostomy were performed on two Shetland sheepdogs with a squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx as a radical or palliative treatment. The dogs showed clinical improvement without postoperative complications, suggesting that this operative procedure may be a viable treatment for dogs with laryngeal neoplasia The dogs died of unknown cause four months after surgery. Further investigations are needed to observe long-term complications.
