An equine case of hind lameness and wobbler syndrome following an accidental forward fall during exercise was evaluated by diagnostic imaging. The myelography under general anesthesia was suggestive of a dorsally compressed spine between the sixth cervical vertebrae (C6) and C7. Histopathological findings also pointed to compression myelopathy between C6 and C7. A computed tomography scan of the cervical and thoracic (T) vertebraes following euthanasia was diagnostic of fractures of the C7 and joint space widening at the articular processes at the range from C6 to T2. Deformed alignment from C6 to T2 could induce spinal compression.

A 5-year-5-month old Holstein cow was presented with fever, anorexia, and retained placenta. Postnatal vaginal discharge and enlargement of the uterus did not improve after treatment. Although the superficial lymph nodes were not enlarged, enzootic bovine leukosis was suspected because of the enlarged and indurated uterus. An autopsy revealed enlargement of most abdominal lymph nodes, tumor mass formation on the omasum and abomasum, and thickening of the uterine wall. Histologically, there were lymphocyte-like cell infiltrates in the microscopically visible lesions. The tumor cells were immunohistochemically demonstrated to be B-cells origin. Although antibody against bovine leukosis virus (BLV) was negative, BLV provirus was detected from the peripheral blood. The findings suggested that BLV infection may be related to leukosis in the present case.

To examine the effect of GnRH agonist treatment on pregnancy rates in frozen-thawed embryo transfer, 80 Japanese Black beef cattle recipients were divided at random into 2 groups, and the following administration was conducted : The GnRH group (n=40) underwent intramuscular (i.m.) injection with 100μg of gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist (fertirelin acetate; GnRH-A) on day 6 (day 0 =onset of estrus), while the control group (n =40) underwent i.m. injection of 2 ml saline as a control. On day 14, the ovaries were examined and the blood concentration of progesterone (P4) was determined in 10 recipients of each group. One newly formed induced corpus luteum (CL) was detected in 90% (9/10) of the GnRH group, while no recipient of the control group had induced CL. There were no significant difference between the GnRH and control groups in P4 concentrations (4.57 ± 1.55 and 3.72 ± 2.39 ng/ml; mean ± SD), or conception rates (50% and 40%). From these results, it is indicated that GnRH-A treatment on the day before embryo transfer have brought new induced CL formation, but have had not increased plasma P4 concentration or the conception rate.

A survey was conducted to learn how dog owners in Aomori prefecture are keeping and managing their pet dogs. A questionnaire containing 29 questions and was conducted at animal hospitals and other locations. Four hundred and seventy one people responded. Seventy percent of the respondents were females. The highest age groups were in their 30s to 40s. More than 90% of the respondents live with family members. More than 50% of the respondents said that the reason they kept dogs was because their family members like animals. More than 75% believe it is “a good thing” to neuter the pets but only 40% of dog owners actually had their dog neutered. Only 30% of owners put microchips or owners' names on the dogs. Despite advertisements from veterinary associations and the Ministry of Environment, neutering pet dogs and putting identifying indications on them is still comparatively rare. This suggests that veterinary professionals should do more to advertise and educate dog owners.

In five dogs presenting with acute congestive heart failure from different causes that came to the hospital, the physical, blood, and X-ray examinations, blood pressure measurement, and echocardiography revealed the left ventricular failure with the pulmonary edema in one dog, and the right ventricular failure that developed pulmonary hypertension in four dogs. All dogs underwent combination therapy of milrinone and carperitide at low doses. This therapy reduced the elevated heart rates, the left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, a tricuspid regurgitation speed, and pulmonary arterial pressure, without decreasing blood pressure and cardiac output or worsening renal insufficiency. It is therefore suggested that this treatment is an effective therapy for the acute advanced stage of the chronic cardiac failure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report showing the usefulness of this combination for clinics treating dogs.
