Multiple masses appeared in the skin of the right foot and the oral cavity of a two-month-old crossbred calf that had exhibited swelling in the right tarsal region from birth. The sizes of the cutaneous and gingival masses were from 0.5 to 3 cm in diameter and they were white in color and edematous at their cut surfaces. Histopathologically, each mass was composed of numerous various-sized mature blood vessels lined with a single layer of endothelial cells. The endothelial cells had enlarged nuclei without atypia or mitosis. Mucin production and loose fibrous connective tissue were observed in the stroma. This case was diagnosed as bovine juvenile angiomatosis, since the histopathological features resembled vascular hamartoma, and the masses were seen in multiple sites in the calf. This is the first report of bovine juvenile angiomatosis in Japan.
This study compared potassium diformate to colistin sulfate as a feed additive for weaned piglets. A total of 44 weaned piglets were divided into three groups: a potassium diformate group (n=15), a colistin sulfate group (n=15), and a negative control group that received no additives (n=15). The study was conducted over 36 days, and factors including daily body weight and fecal characteristics were evaluated. Feces were assessed every three days to examine macroscopic characteristics and the area ratio of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria on gram-stained samples. The reference ranges for the gram-negative bacterial ratio in normal feces were calculated from the mean ±1 standard deviation of the ratio. The increase in daily body weight during the study period was similar for both the potassium diformate and colistin sulfate groups throughout the period. The reference range for the gram-negative bacterial ratio was 74.8% to 97.0%, and there were no differences between the groups. These results suggest that potassium diformate has a similar impact to colistin on daily body weight, fecal characteristics, and the fecal gram-negative bacteria ratio.
Pseudomembranous cystitis in cats is a rare disease that is characterized by the formation of a pseudomembrane due to the partial detachment of the bladder mucosa, and it generally has a relatively benign prognosis. We observed a cat that exhibited the total detachment of the bladder mucosa along with acute regenerative anemia. A 13-year-old neutered male cat presented to the primary care veterinary hospital with anorexia and dysuria. Persistent hematuria resulted in the packed cell volume (PCV) dropping rapidly from 50% to 16% within seven days, leading to a significant deterioration in its condition. Ultrasonography showed a calcified occupying mass in the bladder without septal structures, which are not typical findings. The diagnosis of pseudomembranous cystitis was confirmed through ultrasonographic and histopathological examination. This case suggests that pseudomembranous cystitis can occur without the typical septal structures, complicating diagnosis, and that acute anemia could potentially result from the rapid detachment of the bladder mucosa. Frequent ultrasonographic monitoring is recommended for cats with urinary retention, and early surgical intervention should be considered in cases where rapid mucosal detachment is observed, given the potential risk of acute anemia.
