    To investigate the etiological role of vapB-positive Rhodococcus equi in pigs, R. equi was isolated from the submaxillary lymph nodes with or without macroscopically detectable lesions of apparently healthy growing-finishing pigs at a slaughterhouse in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. R. equi was isolated from 57 (24.6%) of 232 pigs with macroscopically detectable lymph node lesions, and 56 (98.2%) of the 57 isolates were vapB-positive. R. equi was isolated from 10 (2.4%) of 420 pigs without lymph node lesions, and six (60%) of the 10 isolates were vapB-positive. Plasmid DNA was isolated from the 62 vapB-positive isolates and digested with EcoRI and NsiI to obtain the plasmid profile. Fifty-two (83.9%), three (4.8%), and four (6.5%) isolates contained pVAPB subtypes 1, 2, and 3, respectively, while the remaining three isolates were of pVAPB subtypes 9, 13, and 14, respectively. Twelve specimens from lymph nodes with macroscopically detectable lesions were randomly selected for histopathological staining. Granulomatous lesions resembling tuberculosis were found in 11 of the 12 specimens, and the remaining specimen showed typical foci of malakoplakia in the lymph node. The isolation rates of R. equi and vapB-positive R. equi from lymph nodes with macroscopically detectable lesions were significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of lymph nodes without lesions, suggesting an etiologic association between vapB-positive R. equi and macroscopically detectable granulomatous lesions in porcine submaxillary lymph nodes. Previous reports on the prevalence of vapB-positive R. equi in pigs are reviewed and discussed.

    Gastric ulcer is a common disease affecting pigs worldwide, with a prevalence reported as high as 93%. The cause of porcine gastric ulcer is multifactorial, with Helicobacter suis (H. suis) being considered as the primary pathogenic factor. To date, prevalence of H. suis resulting in porcine gastric ulcer in Taiwan has not been investigated. In this study, we collected 360 pig stomachs from the slaughterhouses. In addition, stomach tissues from the 88 diseased pigs submitted for necropsy were divided into symptomatic and asymptomatic groups. Gastric lesions were scored, and polymerase chain reaction was used to determine the occurrence of gastric ulcer and the prevalence of H. suis. The positive rate of H. suis in the samples from slaughtered pigs was 49.7%, and both infection of H. suis and the presence of gastric lesions were prone to occur in autumn. The positive rates of H. suis infection in the symptomatic and asymptomatic groups were 59.1% and 31.8%, respectively. Moreover, the proportion of the samples with gastroesophageal ulcer in the symptomatic group was 68.2%, predominantly observed in growing pigs. The incidence of the samples from the slaughterhouses with gastroesophageal erosion to ulceration revealed a significant difference between H. suis -infected and H. suis -uninfected pigs; however, there is no significant difference in the samples of diseased pigs. In conclusion, H. suis infection was associated with gastric ulcer in slaughtered pigs, but it was not the primary cause of gastroesophageal ulcer in diseased pigs with clinical symptoms.

    Mastectomy is the standard treatment for mammary gland tumors in dogs. In addition to traditional therapy, sodium dichloroacetate (DCA) can act as target therapy, as it may promote autophagy, reduce metastatic potential, and tumor proliferation in mammary tumor cell lines. This study aimed to analyze the effects of DCA as preoperative therapy for mammary tumors in bitches. Nineteen animals were selected, and they received DCA at a dose of 10 mg/kg orally every 12 hr, for 15 days. The periodic evaluation included hematological analysis (complete blood count and biochemical markers), evaluation of gastrointestinal adverse effects, evaluation of tumor volume, histopathological analysis, and immunohistochemical evaluation (Ki67 and cyclooxygenase-2/COX-2 markers). After treatment, there was a significant reduction in hematocrit (P=0.02) and leukocyte (P=0.04) means. Despite the variations for these two hematological parameters, the means remained within the reference range for the species. There were two cases of vomiting and one case of diarrhea. Most cases were classified as carcinoma in mixed tumor (n=7, 36.8%), followed by solid carcinoma (n=6, 31.6%). Nine cases (47.4%) showed reduced tumor volume, nine (47.4%) had stable disease, and one showed progressive disease. While there was no sample with a COX-2 score higher than 6, tumor samples with COX-2 scores 3 and 4 were significantly associated with stable disease or progression. DCA preoperative treatment for bitches with mammary gland tumors showed safety and potential cytoreduction in some cases.

    The genus Hepatozoon consists of apicomplexan protozoans that affect mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. In dogs, the Hepatozoon species include H. canis and H. americanum, which are transmitted by the Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick and cause nonspecific signs, such as fever, weight loss, diarrhea, and blood disorders. These protozoans have a worldwide distribution in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America, including Colombia. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with H. canis in the urban and rural areas of Ibagué, Colombia. Blood samples were collected from 308 dogs (180 rural areas and 128 urban areas). Collected data included dog breed, sex, age, environmental factors, and the presence of ectoparasites. A fragment of the 18S rRNA gene was amplified by PCR for detection of the pathogen and confirmed by sequencing. Among the 308 samples, 14 were positive (14/308, 4.5%) for the presence of H. canis. The partial sequence of the 18S rRNA gene showed identity values >98% with H. canis, forming a cluster with sequences from Latin America. An epidemiological survey found two protective factors: most of the time at home (P=0.055) and overnight stay at home (P=0.03). This is the first molecular study of the prevalence and phylogeny analysis of H. canis in Ibagué, Colombia. The findings may help determine risk factors and enhance our understanding of the geographic distribution of H. canis in Colombia.

    We describe here a case of canine mammary benign mixed tumor with sebaceous metaplasia in the right fifth mammary gland of an eight-year-old, intact female Poodle dog. Grossly, the mass was firm with off-white, poorly lobulated cut surfaces. Histologically, the luminal epithelial cells and myoepithelial cells proliferated with cartilage formation and focal squamous metaplasia. Moreover, a large number of nests of various sizes, which were filled with foamy cells in the center and associated with basaloid reserve–like cells in the periphery, showed sebaceous gland-like structures. Immunohistochemically, myoepithelial cells and reserve–like cells in the metaplastic sebaceous gland-like structures were CK14, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and p63 positive, suggesting a possibility that these two components may have a common cell of origin.

    Cryptococcosis, a globally distributed mycotic disease caused by Cryptococcus neoformans or C. gattii, has been extensively studied in various domestic animals and humans. However, non-domestic species have often been overlooked in the literature, with limited attention given to their susceptibility and contribution to the epidemiology of the disease. In this study, a captive two-year-old Cape hyrax in a Japanese zoo exhibited neurological symptoms and torticollis, ultimately succumbing to the infection. Necropsy and pathological analyses, including histopathological techniques and PCR, revealed the presence of C. neoformans in the lungs, cerebrum, and internal auditory canal. While cryptococcosis has been reported in various wild animals globally, this case represents the first documented cryptococcosis in Cape hyrax.

    The sleep-wake cycle represents a crucial physiological process essential for maintaining homeostasis and promoting individual growth. In dogs, alterations in sleep patterns associated with age and dog’s correlation with temperament factors, such as nervousness, have been reported, and there is an increasing demand for precise monitoring of sleep and physical activity in dogs. The present study aims to develop an analysis method for measuring sleep-wake patterns and physical activity in dogs by utilizing an accelerometer and a smartphone. By analyzing time series data collected from the accelerometer attached to the dog’s collar, a comprehensive sleep and activity analysis model was constructed. This model classified the activity level into seven classes and effectively highlighted the variations in sleep-activity patterns. Two classes with lower activity levels were considered as sleep, while other five levels were regarded as wake based on the rate of occurrence. This protocol of data acquisition and analysis provides a methodology that enables accurate and extended evaluation of both sleep and physical activity in dogs.

    Many emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases are prevalent, and the number of patients with allergies is increasing. Therefore, the importance of purifying the living environment is increasing. Photocatalysts undergo extreme redox reactions and decompose organic matter upon exposure to the excitation light. In contrast to ultraviolet light and disinfectants, which are standard methods for inactivating viruses and eliminating microorganisms, photocatalysts can decompose toxic substances, such as endotoxins and allergens, rendering them harmless to the human body. Photocatalysts have attracted significant attention as potential antiviral and antimicrobial agents. This review outlines the antiviral, antimicrobial, and anti-allergenic effects of photocatalysts. Especially, we have discussed the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 in liquids and aerosols, elimination of Legionella pneumophila in liquids, decomposition of its endotoxin, decomposition of cat and dog allergens, and elimination of their allergenicity using photocatalysts. Furthermore, we discuss future perspectives on how photocatalysts can purify living environments, and how photocatalytic technology can be applied to companion animals and the livestock industry.

    Osteosarcoma treatment with limb-sparing surgery using liquid nitrogen can be applied to canine patients experiencing diminished quality of life after leg amputation. In particular, forelimb amputation may affect gait more than hindlimb amputation. In this study, limb-sparing surgery using liquid nitrogen was applied to primary osteosarcomas arising in the proximal scapula of a Welsh Corgi, the proximal humerus of a Golden Retriever, and the distal radius of a Great Pyrenees, according to the protocol of Tsuchiya et al. In all cases, postoperative radiographic examination revealed bone union between the treated and matrix bones. All patients recovered their gait postoperatively. These results suggest that limb-sparing surgery using liquid nitrogen-treated autologous bone is an effective option for patients with osteosarcoma.

    Premating maternal nutrition is crucial for postweaning follicle growth, thereby influencing piglet birth weight in subsequent litters. The present study investigated the impact of supplementing a carbohydrate-rich premating diet in sows on metabolic hormones, subsequent piglet birth weight and reproductive performance. Sows were distributed into three groups, control (n=42) received standard diets; treatment I (n=41) received the same diets supplemented with 500 g of a carbohydrate-rich premating diet from weaning until insemination; treatment II (n=42) received the same diets supplemented with 500 g of a carbohydrate-rich premating diet from 7 days before weaning until insemination. Blood samples were taken from sows around weaning to measure serum insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin, and blood glucose after feeding. The study found that sows on a carbohydrate-rich diet (treatment II) had higher postprandial glucose (P<0.05) and insulin levels (P=0.06) than others. This diet did not affect overall reproductive performance, but it did increase piglet birth weight and reduce the number of low-birth weight piglets compared to the control (P<0.001) and treatment I groups (P<0.05). Supplementing a carbohydrate-rich premating diet for 7 days before weaning until insemination enhanced postprandial glucose and insulin concentrations in weaned sows. This dietary intervention led to improved subsequent piglet birth weight and reduced the proportion of low-birth weight piglets.

    Bovine herpesvirus 4 (BoHV-4) is an indigenous virus in cattle prevalent mainly in North and South American countries and European countries, but the genomic sequences and genetic characteristics of Japanese strains have not been reported. BoHV-4 is suspected, but not proven, to be associated with various diseases. In the present study, we isolated BoHV-4 from a 10-month-old Japanese Black calf with respiratory symptoms in Japan. To identify the genetic characteristics of the isolate named strain SG20, complete genome sequencing was performed using a combination of next-generation and Sanger sequencing technologies. The complete long unique coding region (LUR) of SG20 was found to comprise 108,819 nucleotides with 41.4% GC content and contain at least 78 open reading frames. It shares 83.4 to 99.3% overall nucleotide identity with six BoHV-4 strains available in the database. The deduced amino acid sequence alignment revealed that SG20 contains genotype 1-specific features of BoHV-4, such as amino acid substitutions and insertions within the glycoprotein B region. Phylogenetic analyzes based on the nucleotide sequences of ORF20 indicated that the virus belonged to genotype 1 (Movar 33/63-like group). The strain was also analyzed using the complete LUR and placed in the same clade as a strain recently isolated from China, but it was distinct from American and European BoHV-4 strains of genotype 1. Although further genomic and epidemiologic information is needed, our results help elucidate the molecular epidemiology of BoHV-4 and provide a foundation for future studies.

    The present study analyzed B-cell clonality and bovine leukemia virus (BLV) provirus integration sites in cattle with enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) having BLV proviral copy numbers less or greater than the number of bovine nucleated cells. EBL cattle with BLV copy numbers less than the number of bovine nucleated cells showed monoclonal and biclonal proliferation of B-cells with one BLV provirus integration site. On the other hand, EBL cattle with BLV copy numbers greater than the number of bovine nucleated cells showed monoclonal proliferation of B-cells with two BLV provirus integration sites. These results suggest that superinfection of BLV can occur in EBL cattle.

    We devised a method to detect the classical swine fever virus (CSFV) in tail-wiped swabs from wild boars. The CSFV gene in swabs was detected with high sensitivity using nested real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which is a combination of reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) and real-time PCR. We compared CSFV gene detection from boar tissue using the conventional and our tail-wiped swab method. The tail-wiped swab method showed sensitivity and specificity of 100% (26/26) and 98.8% (172/174), respectively compared to the conventional method. Thus, the swab-based CSFV detection method was considered to have detection sensitivity comparable to that of conventional methods. Additionally, we conducted surveillance for CSFV in wild boars on Awaji Island. CSFV was detected in 10.7% (45/420) of samples.
