A technique of digital processing of video pictures is explained which enables a measurement of two-dimensional velocity distribution in a very short time. The particularities of the method are followings : 1) high speed analysis which needs only a few seconds to analyze a pair of 256 × 256 digital pictures ; 2) highly inexpensive hardware system consisting of a 16-bit personal computer, an additional frame memory board and a video camera ; 3) reliable error detection and correction capabilities.
The method is examined in measuring a rotation of a turn table and a two-dimensional sink in a vessel. The typical analysis time which depends on the conditions of pictures, though, is 2 to 4 seconds to obtain 100-170 vectors. The source codes of the programs are coded in C.
