The surface composition of alloys (18-8 stainless steel and cast iron) abraded on emery papers of various fineness was observed by Auger electron spectroscopy. The main results obtained are as follows :
(1) In the case of 18-8 stainless steel, the ratio of oxygen to iron peak height from abraded surface increases with decreasing emery particle size.
(2) In the case of cast iron, the ratio of carbon to iron peak height from abraded surface increases gradually with decreasing emery particle size.
