Theory of indirect (or super) exchange interaction between a pair of adatoms on the solid surface has been described. It is analogous to the super exchange interaction in Perovskite antiferromagnets. The effective exchange integral J_± has been derived from first principles. The results of numerical calculation of J_± for H/W system show that (1) J_± is negative and amounts to a considerable magnitude, (2) it is of long range (damps slowly and oscillates strongly as a function of the adatom-adatom distance), and (3) Fermi energy and adsorption form (or site) also affect it strongly. Finally antiferromagnetic spin ordering of the adsorbed layer on the surface has been briefly discussed.

It was shown that AEAPS (Auger Electron Appearance Potential Spectroscopy) is useful for the observation of the change of unfilled density of states on solid surfaces. The changes of Fe-L₃ spectra after CO exposure and heat treatments were observed. The Fe (L₃ dip/L₃ peak) is a good indicator of the change. The changes correspond to the splitting of 3d and 4s band densities. It is considered that the oxide layer on the iron surfaces may be formed at more than 100L CO exposure. The unfilled density of states calculated from clean Fe spectrum shows good agreement with the results obtained by X-ray isochromat spectroscopy.
