A field emission microscope was used to investigate the variation of the field emission pattern and work function of W due to the coadsorption of Hg, NaI and I2.
When the W tip is annealed at 700 K, the average work functions are 3.7 eV both for NaI/W tip and NaI/Hg/W tip. In the case of adsorption of NaI on W covered with Hg, the average work function first decreases from 4.9 eV to the minimum value 4.6 eV with the amount of adsorbed NaI, after passing through the minimum, it increases till the final value of 5.6 eV.
When I2 are adsorbed on the NaI/Hg/W tip, the average work function is 6.8 eV. This value is the same as these of I2 /W system, indicating that the upper most adsorbed layer plays the dominant role in the determination of work function.

Long-chain fatty acid (cadmium arachidate) LB multi-layers are fabricated and the transfered film conditions on the substrate are investigated by ellipsometry.
Ellipsometry has been widely used in measuring the thickness and optical constants of a thin film at the same time. We propose a new method to evaluate the refractive index and thickness, independently, of the thin film which is anisotropic as well as isotropic in the case the optical absorption of the film can be neglected.
Using the method proposed, we investigated the build-up state of multilayered LB films deposited on the Si3N4/Si substrates and determined optical constants of them. We found that this method of the evaluation by ellipsometry was very useful to study these organized films.

In order to produce H- (D-) ions effectively by volume production in a sheet plasma, effects of vacuum chamber are studied by using two sizes of metal vacuum chamber and by changing their bias voltages with respect to the sheet plasma. Then, we find the H- (D-) ion current increases abruptly with the increase of width of the chamber perpendicular to the magnetic field, while it takes a maximum near a floating potential of the chamber (negative for the plasma potential outside of the sheet plasma). These effects are related with a size of space where the plasma potential is higher than those of boundaries. That is, the H- (D-) ion current increases with the spatial size in which H- (D-) ions are confined and hydrogen (deuteron) positive ions are lost rapidly along the magnetic field.

The fluoro compounds for lubricants, such as hexakis (1, 1, 5-trihydroperfluoropentyloxy) cyclotriphosphazene (I) and perfluoropolyether (II), were examined comparatively concerning their chemical stabilities toward AlCl3 at various temperatures. (I) was found to be an excellent lubricant as its decomposition occurred little and only a small amounts of phosgene evolved by heating in the presence of AlCl3. While (I) gave only small amounts of chlorine-containing compounds above 80°C in the presence of AlCl3 (50%), (II) decomposed considerably, producing the chloro compounds with low molecular weight by the breakdown of main chain. At the reaction temperatures of 60-120°C, (I) were recovered more than 95% by the 1, 1, 2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (F-113) extraction. (II) recovered by the F-113 extraction decreased from 100% (23°C) to 41% (120°C) with the increase of reaction temperature. The amounts of phosgene evolved in the reaction of (I) and (II) with AlCl3 were 0.0099 and 20.7 g/l at 100°C, respectively.
