While engineers go out to the markets and try to find needs and develop new technologies, research on technical marketing is still behind. The Engineering Brands Workshop was established in November 2007. This workshop focuses on discussion and research about fusion of engineering and markets. This paper reports a part of typical report in the Workshop which tackled for five years, and a future subject.
In July of 2011, "Business Innovation Workshop" was started in JDES. This paper is the report of the workshop. We had nine workshop meetings until September in 2012. One of the main topics of workshop was the "Lead User Innovation". Presenters reported the verious types of partnership with appropriate lead users, which was important for innovation, and it seemed to be one of the key success factor of the innovation.
It is said that Japanese innovation system isn't able to expand beyond the limits of the economic growth. The change to open innovation system is required to grow the economy. And many kinds of product today are becoming complicated, consisted from many patents. These kinds of product cannot be developed by only one company. So, the company is developing these kinds of product have to manage the patents which related to several companies. Therefore, the intelligent property management is to be more important. In a bid to develop methods of the intelligent property management, the studies are conducted by the case studies of advanced companies and speeches of the researchers regarding intelligent property. The research accomplishments and the plans of intelligent property management workshop are reported.
In 2006, Business Innovation workshop was started in the JDES. This paper reports the summary and findings of the presentations in the studies from 2006 to 2012. Now in the world, the trend of open innovation has overspread all industries not only ICT (Information and Communication Technology) but also all kinds of industries. In Japan, however, the trend is very weak and most of Japanese big companies still keep "in-house innovation". We suppose that it is one of the reasons of "the lost twenty years of Japan". In addition, the lack of real coordinators in Japan accelerates the trend.
The Japanese economy is facing long-term recession for almost 20 years. Great East Japan Earthquake occurred there on March 11, 2011, which accompanied with Tsunami and it triggered catastrophic damage for Fukushima nuclear power plants. Japanese ability to prepare for future crises may be inferior. Nevertheless, history has proven that it is the DNA of Japanese to demonstrate the super ability for the reconstruction when once the preeminent national crisis occurs. The Japan Development Engineering Society dares to propose a new business model in order to find exit for the dark tunnel of the recession. The community of an area which has a variety of local resources has various cultural custom beyond economic relation, a social norm, and a confidential relation. If these resources are not organically related, they cannot be converted into the management resources which bring about local superiority. Therefore, the social entrepreneur recognizes such management resources and has to build a network in order to gain the resources. The purpose of this paper is to show clearly how did the social entrepreneur build the network and has gained local resources in the construction process. In this paper, the small-scale-hydropower enterprise by the business type NPO is undertaken applicable to research. In order that this paper aimed at a detailed examination of a local resource acquisition process, it adopted the qualitative method of research. The feature of this method of research is thinking qualitative data as important, and is being able to analyze a small number of example from many sides deeply. The social entrepreneur in the example of this paper had realized creation of new social value in five steps of processes. The strong point of tie intensity was utilized and the place was managed. The contribution to the business of this paper is having shown the following two points in this example. Strong tie is effective in acquisition of justification, and agreement formation of an area. Weak tie is effective in reservation and business innovation of enterprise nature. Moreover, the relation with public institutions, such as administration, showed about the influence which it has on an operating body's small-scale-hydropower business.
Bulletin Board System has spread rapidly as the means of communication. However, these means has been misused as an irresponsible comment, a slander and defamation, devastation, the misunderstanding of the interpretation, harmful and wrong information, the delay of the reply, and the outflow of the private information. The countermeasure against these problems can think the participation system of the Internet by the real name. But, the participation system of the Internet by the real name has some problems. Because the real name system makes the reporting of their opinion openly difficult, the active participation becomes difficult Therefore, this paper presents the type of participation and its effect of the Internet obtained from causality analysis based on structural equation models.
The apparent lack of understanding, shown by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), of the dangers of hydrogen explosions in a nuclear power plant has to be pointed out when considering the explosion which occurred at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant. If TEPCO had understood the significant risks involved in the running of a nuclear power plant, such a major accident could have been avoided. Even in the government report, written by the Investigation Committee on the Accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Stations of TEPCO, this lack of understanding is evident. In the minutes of the meeting, which was held to discuss the report, the secretary of the committee states, "An unexpected hydrogen explosion has occurred." Furthermore, the report gave the amount of hydrogen generated by the water-zirconium reaction as 900 kg. This was an amount taken from the TEPCO report on the incident and not independently verified. In contrast, after the Three-Mile-Island disaster, the NRC estimated the resultant amount of hydrogen produced in the reaction by themselves. The key factor in any hydrogen explosion is temperature. In my last paper, where I discussed the Three-Mile-Island incident, I stated that when simulating a hydrogen explosion at a higher temperature this results in a significantly shorter reaction time. For example, at 1000°C the time is 100 hours, whereas at 1500°C it is two hours. Therefore, in the case of the Fukushima accident, all attention should have been first focused on the cooling of the reactor to avoid the generation of hydrogen which would, and did, ultimately lead to an explosion.
The food industry in Japan covers 5% of GDP and 7% of contribution of working population recently. Major successful companies such as Watami group of drinking house, Saizelia of popular Italian restraint and Kura of rotating Sushi bar has been expanding their business with M&A and aiming 6th industry covered not only services in shops of 3rd industry, but also manufacturing and precooking at factory of 2nd and making rice and vegetable in own farm of 1st industry. This movement of 6th industry of food industry leads the direction of revolution of agriculture in Japan guided and supported by government today after great east Japan earthquake. This paper studied from history to overview of today's Japanese food industry and strategy of business management of ten representative excellent companies and explores direction of food industry in the 21st century.
Consumption tax of 5% in Japan is comparatively low compared to other countries. But it is insufficient to cover her annual expenditure and the deficit is compensated by the publication of government bonds. However, the publication of government bonds became more than twice her GDP. Besides, there is criticism such as "unfair tax collection", "many tax evasions", "high tax collection cost". The author would like to propose a new "e-Tax" system utilizing ICT used in credit cards. The <e-Tax> utilizes electronic money instead of paper money being used now. The income tax can change tax rate from 0% for the low-income people to the highest tax rate for the high-income people at smoothly progressive rate. It can change tax rate according to the amount of accumulated income electronically and automatically from January 1st, to the present day. In addition, the consumption tax will be fixed 10% in 2015, but, in that case, the low-income people who use all the income to survive pays consumption tax of 10%, while the high income people, the consumption tax rate is lower than 10%, for they can save money without using the total income. This is reverse progressive taxation. The <e-Tax> can change tax rate automatically according to the amount of accumulation of the consumption from January 1st to the present day. It can solve the problem of the reverse progressive taxation. Because all these tax collection is performed by electronic money by ATM terminals and it is expected that tax collection cost will be much reduced without tax evasion.
The role of management of technology education is growing. Although our technical capabilities maintain the as ever very high level, Japanese company lags behind the foreign country in the step of transforming technical capabilities into a business value. The incompatibility to a globalization of intellectual property management is one cause. Japan Patent Office publishes technology trend investigation report based on patent applications in various technological fields. From the data of Japanese companies in the reports, the lack of strategic intellectual property management in many businesses became an evident. Japanese company has to tackle a prevention of a technology leakage, and enhancement in a technology valuation qualification. In 2010, Japan Association of Professional Graduate Schools of Technology Management published MOT core curriculum. MOT core curriculum consists of four core knowledge areas and intellectual property management is one of those. The curriculum will serve as an guiding principle of the MOT education in Japan.
