Kumibinroto is a Kampo formulation which was first produced by Sohaku Asada (1815-1894) and which has since been used for patients with stasis of body fluids presenting beriberi like symptoms. Previously, we reported that tympanic sounds on right side of the abdomen might be an indication for the use of kumibinroto. In this study, having both symptoms with stasis of body fluids, and tympanic sounds on right side of the abdomen were used as a target when prescribing kumibinroto. To the best our knowledge, the present study was the first to demonstrate that the effects of kumibinroto give significant improvement in dermatological disorders such as chronic prurigo, cutaneous pruritis and chronic urticaria, and susceptibility to chills. These findings suggest that tympanic sounds on right side of the abdomen may an extremely useful indicator for kumibinroto, and position it for practical use for various disorders, for which it has not been formerly used.

We report a case of recurrent accumulation of pleural effusion, successfully treated with goreisan. A 61-year-old man had been receiving treatment in our hospital for congestive heart failure, aortic regurgitation, and alcoholic hepatitis. On **********, acute aggravation of congestive heart failure caused retention of this pleural effusion. Although the effusion initially disappeared, following puncture of thoracic cavity, this pleural effusion increased again and he was admitted to our hospital. We administered goreisan without a change in other oral medications, and the pleural effusion disappeared and did not recur thereafter. goreisan is generally prescribed for dry mouth and urinary problems associated with various disorders of the body's fluid metabolism. In this case, it is thought that goreisan showed an action which affected water regulation.

[Case 1] At 37 weeks and 5 days, a 27-year old woman was admitted to our clinic due to spontaneous rupture of the membranes. Her first pregnancy had come to term in a cesarean section delivery, because of toxemia and the breech presentation. This time, she wanted to deliver spontaneously. She didn't go into spontaneous labor, however, 44 hours after rupture of her membranes. Past history included the cesarean section, so labor induction with oxytocin or prostaglandin was not attempted. Active labor was established after administered keishibukuryogan as a saiseito, and she delivered spontaneously at 38 weeks and 1 day.
[Case 2] At 39 weeks and 5 days, a 33-year old woman was admitted to our clinic, due to elective induction of labor. Her first pregnancy had come to term in a labor induction with oxytocin for the uterine inertia. In this pregnancy she wanted to deliver without the use of oxytocin. Active labor was established after administered Keishi-bukuryogan as a Saisei-to, and she delivered spontaneously at the same 39 weeks and 5 days.
The present cases suggest that keishibukuryogan may be effective for establishment of labor, not to say a labor inducer or stimulator such as oxytocin and prostaglandin.

We report on a case of Hailey-Hailey disease successfully treated with Sokeikakketsuto. This case was a 70-year-old woman. Her mother, grandmother and elder sister had the same symptoms. From 2004 August, she noticed erythematous exudative lesions with itching on both sides of her inguinal area. By September, she was diagnosed with Hailey-Hailey disease histologically. We treated using a topical corticosteroid at first. This had little effect, so we considered treatment using Kampo medicines. We diagnosed a kidney Yin-deficiency from a fissure of her tongue, thirstiness, numbness in the region below the umbilicus and night sweat, thus and selected Rokumigan. We then diagnosed deficiency of Qi from her general malaise, so chose Hochuekkito. The pathology of Hailey-Hailey disease exists mainly in the epidermis which covers most of the body's surface area. And this indicates the presence of pathogenic wind factor. We considered the presence of dampness as a disease-inducing factor because of her exudation, and the presence of the heat from her erythema. So we also selected Eppikajutsuto as an anti wind-wetness-heat drug. Her general condition was very much improved with these administrations, but her skin lesions improved very little. So we stopped Eppikajutsuto, and Sokeikakketsuto administration was started instead. After this change of drug, her skin lesions were improved remarkably.

The relationship between feces shape and patient age was examined, in one hundred patients with chronic constipation. The scybalum-like feces group was significantly younger than the thick feces group. Kampo's theories about the relationship between feces shape and age should be re-examined.
