The acupuncture is one of the oriental traditional treatments which are in Asia still now widely practised. It is performed on particular diagnosis, such as “Chinese Pulse” to estimate the “Dysharmony of the energy” and to decide how to apply the techniques.
Recently in Japan some of the western doctors have attempted new interpretati ons of such kind of evaluations, for example Dr. Y. Nakatani proposed several years ago a kind of electric test: he insisted that the measurement of skin resistance of the “source-points” on each meridians could indicate the local tonus of the sympathetic nervous system of the meridians, so one can equilibrate the deviations by the test.(E. R. S.= Electric Resistance of the Sourse-point) According to his researches, the E. R. S. could substitute the Chinise “Meridian -diagnosis”.
To check up his proposition, some clinical cases were measured with our modified electric tester before and after the acupuncture treatment. A patient who suffered from very stubborn urtica ria for 4 years, resisting against any kind of therapy, was successfully cured by means of our newly developed methode, i. e. what we called electromagnetic acupuncture. His E. R. S. gave no abnormality even before as well as after his recovery, in the sense what Dr. Y. Nakatani means. As the control, E. R. S. in 50 cases of apparently healthy young people were meas ured to settle the normal values.
In the computation we have recognized a factor which nobody ever noticed until now. We named it the “Gradient of Electric Skin Resistance on the Source-points”(=G. E. R. S.). That is, the E. R. S. of the “Yin-meridians” are higher on the upper extremity tha n lower extremity and that of the “Yang-meridians” vice versa in the normal condition. In above-mentioned case, there was abnormal gradient just before treatment on certain meridians, which after he was cured, almost came back to normal. So we think this factor G. E. R. S. should be also important to evaluate the pathological situations on which one could apply acupuncture.
