    The followings are the results of our study on the effects of LVM tested through double blind method using KM as the active placebo in 275 cases of bacillary dysentery and its allied disorders. A comparison of MIC of various antibiotics was also conducted on 120 strains of Shigellae and 10 other strains isolated from the patients.
    1. The MIC of LVM was almost equal to that of KM, the level being between 3.12 and 12.5 mcg/ml.
    2. The clinical effects of LVM were statistically almost equal to that of KM concerning requiring days for defervescence, formation of normal stools, recovery of diarrhea and ceasing of bacillary discharge.
    3. No side effect was found on the lever, kidney and other organs according to the blood and urine tests. Neither nausea, vertigo nor eruption was observed in this series.

    With the recent improvements in culture technique and culture media for anerobic intestinal flora, our knowledge about it has been remarkably increasing. With this trend, it has been realized that there are much infections due to anerobic organisms than presumed before. Yet, according to my impression on this field in this country, enough attentions have not been directed to this gram negative sporeless Bacteredoides species.
    In this paper, 7 cases of Bacteroides fragilis isolations from abdominal wall abscesses, encountered within recent 13 months period, are described. Almost all cases are those which must have been over-looked about its real causatives without anerobic procedures.
    Cases are: 4 females and 3 males, the age ranging 16-45. All except one which had seemingly spontaneous abscess formation in abdominal wall though having past history of ileus operation ten years previously, developed the abdominal wall abscess related with appendicitis operation.
    In five cases out of seven, Bacteroides fragilis was found from abscess cultures in pure growth in anerobic media, whereas, nothing was produced by aerobic cultures. In two cases, it was mixed by α-streptococcus (acrobic) and Fusobacterium, respectively. Above findings would justify our conviction of the causality of Bacyeroides fragilis to the abcess formation and even, in great possibility, to acute appendicitis itself.
    Sensitivity tests on isolated Bacteroides fragilis revealed high sensitivity to TC and CP without exception, while showing resistance to PC, CL, NA, SM, KM, CER and GM Relatively good sensitivity was shown to AB-PC and EM, but this was not always observed consistently.
    The choice of antibiotics was made according to the sensitivity patterns tested which turned out to be effective.
