In order to evaluate the live “AIK-C” measles vaccine, chick embryo tissue type, the field trials with the two lots (Lot # TV-9, # TV-12) of the AIK-C vaccine, and detailed comparative inoculation study on this vaccine and Schwarz vaccine widely used at present were carried out. Numbers of healthy children (8 months-8 years old) with both clinical and serological records after subcutaneous inoculation among initially seronegative vaccinees in the field trials with AIK-C vaccine and in the comparative study on AIK-C and Schwarz vaccines, were as follows, respectively: in field trials, Lot # TV-9 group: 151 cases, Lot # TV-12 group: 210 cases; in the comparative study, AIK-C (Lot # TV-12) group: 45 cases, Schwarz group: 39 cases. These vaccinees were selected for evaluation of the AIK-C Vaccine.
    1. Antibody responses
In the field trials, the seroconversion rates of hemagglutination-inhibiting (HI) antibodies and neutralizing (NT) antibodies, and mean of each antibody titer following vaccintion were as follows, respectively: Lot # TV-9: HI=99.3%, 25.2±0.7, NT=100%, 26.1±1.3; Lot # TV-12: HI-100%, 25.4±0.9, NT-100%, 26.1±1.2, 2. Clinical reactions
    (i) Fever
Fever rate (axillary temperature of 37.5° or higher), the average maximal temperature in feverish children, onset of fever (days postinoculation) and duration of fever were 21.2%, 38.1°, 9.3 days, 1.6 dys in dys in the Lot # TV-9 group, and 21.9%, 38.2°, 8.5 days and 1.6 days in the TV-12 group, respectively.
    (ii) Rash
The rash rate and mean onset of rash appearance for each group were as follows: Lot # TV-9: 21.8%, 9.3 days; Lot # TV-12: 17.6%, 9.4 days, respectively. Most of rashes were miliaria-like rahes appearing sporadically over the whole body, and the number of the rashes were mostly less than ten.
    3. The comparative study
In the comparative study, fever rates of 37.5°, of 39.0°, the average maximal temperature in feverish children, and rash rate for each vaccine were as follows: the AIK-C group: 20.0%(9 cases), 2.2%(1 case), 38.0°, 20.0%(9 cases); the Schwarz group: 51.3%(20 cases), 12.8%(5 cases), 38.5°, 17.9%(7 cases), respectively. The seroconversion rates of HI-antibodies and NT-antibodies, and the geometric mean of each antibody titer following vaccination, were as follows, respectively: AIK-C group: HI=100%, 25.6, NT=100%, 26.4; Schwarz group: HI=100%, 25.7, NT=100%, 26.8.
In the present study, it was concluded that the live AIK-C measles vaccine is a live highly attenuated measles virus vaccine having a satisfactory immunogenicity despite a marked reduction of febrile reaction.
