    We studied on optimum condition of cultivation and a selective medium for Moraxella bovis. The results were obtained as following.
    1. M. bovis showed the best growth in the cultivation at 30°C, for 48hrs., and at pH 8.8 of media.
    2. M. bovis showed the best growth in nutrient broth, and better in HI broth and Trypto-soy broth than peptone water. But little difference between the growth in nutrient broth and HI or Trypto-soy broth was observed. The growth of M. bovis in BHI broth was slower than HI broth.
    3. The growth of M. bovis was accelerate by the addition of 0.05% L-cystine and 1.0% yeast extract in nutrient broth.
    4. We found the utility of new selective medium containing GM and TC as selective agents for the isolation of Moraxella. The new selective medium is composed of 0.3%, beef extract 1.0%, peptone 0.5%, yeast extract 0.05% L-cystine and 0.1% glucose. pH 7.2±0.2.
    5. M. bovis showed the same growth by Miles and Misra method on the nutrient agar plate and the new selective medium plate.
    6. It was possible by the new selective medium that the isolation of Moraxella from the suspension diluted 1: 10 with broth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Staphylococcus epidermidis.
    7. The isolation rate of Moraxella from clinical materials by the new selective medium became expanded 5 times as much by the blood agar plate.

    The morphological and biochemical characters of various species of Moraxella were studied, and a simple keys for identification was devised. The results obtained were as following:
    1. All species of Moraxella were nonmotile, no action to all carbohydrates, and oxidase positive. Therefore, genus Moraxella may be distinguished from other general by morphology, motioity, O-F test and oxidase test.
    2. Moraxella bovis and Moraxella lacunata were differentiated from other Moraxella species by gelatinase test. M. bovis was differentiated from M. lacunata by hemolysis of horse blood.
    3. Moraxella osloensis which does not produce gelatinase, was distinguished from M. non-liquefaciens by the growth on MacConkey agar, a-hemolysis and the growth in peptone water. M. phenylpyruvica was distinguished from other Moraxella species by phenylalanine deaminase.
    4. These methods of identification of Moraxella, can be used in routine laboratory procedures.

    The summary and the results of epidemiological investigation of scarlatina-like disease which prevailed at N nursery school in Toyota-cho during from September to October in 1974 were as follows.
    The first patient infected with this disease appeared around the 17th September, and then the appearances sporadically continued, particulaly 16 absences out of 48 pupils occurred two days later than the 6th October when the joint athletic meeting of neighboring nurseries was held. Because of this, a countermeasure of temporary closing of nursery was taken, and by bacterological examinations and so on, T type 12 streptococci of A group were isolated from all tested nursery children.
    It was marked that T type 12 streptococci of A group were also isolated from 26% of the pupils by a carrier examination after 6 months.
    As controls, both A and B nurseries of Toyota-cho in the same district as N nursery as well as both C and D nurseries in neighboring district of Mine-city were investigated. The rate of carrying hemolytic streptococci (HS) of A nursery was 34%, and type of HS was 12 type. B nursery, 25% with 5/27/44 type and UT of HS. On the other hand, the rates of carrying HS of C and D nurseries in Mine-city district were both 10.9%, the former was 5/27/44 type, 12 type and UT, and the latter was all UT. It was noted that the rate of carrying HS in Toyota-cho district was much higher than that of Mine-city district.
    As regards drug sensitivity pattern, the strain derived from N, A and B nurseries in Toyota--cho district and C nursery in Mine-city district showed a tendency of resistant against TC and EM independent of the type of HS. Contrary to it, the strain derived from D nursery showed a high sensitivity pattern.
