Serum samples from 152 HBsAg carriers were assayed for HBeAg and HBeAb by the radioimmunoassay. The radioimmunoassay was approximately 100-fold more sensitive than immunodiffusion for HBeAg and approximately 8 fold more sensitive than immunodiffusion for HBeAb. By radioimmunoassay only 9.9% of the tested cases were negative for both HBeAg nor HBeAb. In asymptomatic HBsAg carrier group, the freqrency of HBeAb was 71.4%. In chronic hepatitis, it is obvious that HBeAg positivity was significantly more frequent in chronic active hapatitis than chronic inactive hepatitis. The overall frequency of HBeAg and HBeAb coexist in serum was 0.6%. In 3 cases of chronic hepatitis, both HBeAg and HBeAb were detected by radiaimmunoassay before the conversion from HBeAg positivity to HBeAb positivity. There was a positive correlatian between HBeAg titers and S/N ratios of diluted serum (1:20 and 1:00).
To clarify the role of Kupffer cells on liver injury, localizations of LPS in liver tissues with the endotoxin-induced liver injury and in the modified liver tissues by immunopotentiators and a complement inhibitor, were studied. E. coli 026: B6 LPS (Difco Lab.) was injected peritoneally into 98 Sprague-Dawley strain rats two times at 48hours interval. At 48hours after the second LPS injection, all survival rats were sacrificed and the frozen liver sections were prepared. Then, LPS in sections was examined by a direct immunofluorescent technique. On the non-treated control group, LPS was localized mainly in cytoplasms of Kupffer cells and also in extra-Kupffer cells (cytoplasms of hepatic cells and sinusoidal vessel walls). On the immunopotentiators [PSK (Krestin), lysozyme (Neuzym), levamisole, OK-432 (Picibanil)] and a complement inhibitor [K-76] treated groups, especially on the lysozyme group, LPS was localized only in the Kupffer cells and very few in extra-Kupffer cells. It is concluded that phagocytic function of Kupffer cells plays a very important role in protecting a liver from endotoxin-induced liver injury.
We established a novel method to record canine electroencephalogram (EEG) under non-anesthesia and non-restraint condition, and applied to the studies of hepatic encephalopathy (H.E.). Beagles were trained every day laying quietly in a sealed box for not less than 2 hours for 2 weeks. The trained beagles were undertaken portcaval anastomosis operation (PCA), and their EEGs were recorded every day at fixed time. Slow wave appeared stably and dominantly within one month after PCA. In accordance with the changes in their EEGs, characteristic changes similar to patients with H.E. in blood chemistry and aminograms were observed. The deteriorated EEGs were normarized rapidly by the infusion of amino acid solution a specifically formulated for liver failure (THF), and this beneficial effect was retained even one hour after the end of the infusion. Those results suggest that the novel method may be useful for evaluating the effects of amino acid infusions on canine normal or abnormal EEGs.
An autopsy case (55-year-old man) of congestion of the liver, resulted from acute myocardial infarction, with severe vacuolar degeneration and hyaline protein droplets in the hepatocytes was reported, and the relationship between vacuolar degeneration and hyaline protein droplets was also discussed. It is well known that hyaline protein droplets are rarely recognized, although vacuolar degeneration is frequently observed, in the human livers. Pathogenesis and morphogenesis of vacuolar degeneration have been clarified by us, but those of hyaline protein droplets are still obscure. It is, however, thought that hyaline protein droplets relate closely to vacuolar degeneration, because hyaline protein droplets coexist with vacuolar degeneration in many cases and both lesions consist of blood plasma. In the present case, transition from vacuolar degeneration to hyaline protein droplets and many hyaline protein droplets being present in vacuoles were observed. Accordingly, we believed that vacuolar degeneration was present prior to the formation of hyaline protein droplets and some factor, e.g. condensation and other unknown metabolic process, is essential to formation of hyaline protein droplets from vacuolar degeneration.
原発性肝細胞癌の門脈内への腫瘍血栓の存在を示す血管造影上の特徴的所見,すなわちthread and streaks signを3症例に認め,剖検所見と対比した.第1例は54歳,男性,腹腔動脈撮影にて動脈相早期にこのsignを認め,剖検にてそれと一致する部位に門脈本幹,肝内門脈の著明な拡張と腫瘍血栓を確認した,第2例は73歳,男性,肝右葉,側下方にこのsignがあり,剖検にてその部の肝内門脈枝に腫瘍血栓を認めた.第3例は57歳,男性,このsignを肝静脈部に見出し,剖検の結果,肝静脈から下大静脈,そして右心房内にまで至る腫瘍血栓を確認した.以上より,このsignは門脈,肝静脈内腫瘍血栓の存在を示す診断上有意義な所見であり,治療の選択および予後判定上有用な指標となるものである.
