Inocula of
Pythium spp. were prepared using bentgrass seeds in pots under greenhouse conditions and evaluated for the virulence on different plant species. The preemergence damping-off of spinach and melon was increased by increasing the density from 1.25 to 80% of bentgrass seeds colonized by
P. spinosum or
P. irregulare. The inoculum (2.5 or 5g/100g soil) was suitable for postemergence damping-off tests using
P. ultimum, P. irregulare, Pythium 'group G' and
P. spinosum. Concerning postemergence damping-off tests of melons, the inoculum (less than 5g/100g soil) was enough for
P. spinosum, but 5-10g/100g soil was needed for
P. irregulare. The inoculum (6g/85g soil) was applicable to damping-off tests of bentgrass seedlings.

A full length cDNA fragments of CSVd (chrysanthemum stunt viroid) was efficiently amplified by RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) using a set of two primers specific to an English isolate of CSVd. One primer was complementary to a sequence from the 36th to the 55th base, and another primer was identical to a sequence from the 56th to the 75th base. Amplification of any DNA fragments witn the same size did not happened when using RNA preparation of healthy chrysanthemum. Purification of RNA with cellulose CF-11, 2-methoxyethanol and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide was needed for succesful detection of CSVd by RT-PCR from chysanthemum leaf. Detection of CSVd by RT-PCR needed only one or two micro-liter aliquotes of 50 micro-litter RNA sample prepared from one gram of chysanthemum leaf. Even aftter 10
-4-fold dilution of the RNA sample, the amplified fragment of CSVd cDNA could be detected.

From 1981 to 1989, outbreaks of
Rhizoctonia fumigata-, R. oryzae-sativae-, R. oryzae-, R. solani (AG 2-2, IIIB)-and
Sclerotium. hydrophilum-disease were surveyed during the maturation stage of rice plants in 2 paddy fields. The surveys were carried out once a year by collecting sheath blight-like lesions from 30-35 plots (4.5-5.0 m interval between plots) in the fields (5-6 a) and by isolating causal fungifrom these lesions.
R. oryzae-sativae-caused brown sclerotial disease differed in the outbreak area over time, although the other 4 sclerotial diseases did not vary markedly in the outbreak area.
R. fumigata-caused disease, especially, and brown sclerotial disease occurred frequently over a wide area, while
R. oryzae-caused sheath spot,
R. solani- and
S. hydrophilum-caused disease were limited in area. For sheath spot, there was continuous occurrence in the same plot during the surveys. Brown sclerotial disease was also detected in a few of the same divisions or neighboring ones where the disease had occurred in preceding years.

In a system consisting of a group of 5 eggplants, adult female
Tetranychus kanzawai were induced to emigrate from plants sprayed with permethrin, thereby resulting in a higher incidence of their between-plant dispersal than in a system without the spray. However, the subsequent, overall densities of the mites on the 5 plants did not differ significantly between the 2 systems, rendering the hypothesis that a synthetic-pyrethroid-spray repellent effect may lead to an increased population density of spider mites.
Of the 2 dominant predators of
T. kanzawai in the study field, the phytoseiid mite.,
Amblyseius longispinosus, was artificially removed, leaving only the anthocorid bug,
Orius spp. In plots which were periodically sprayed with permethrin, the densities of
T. kanzawai were 10 to 20 times higher than in unsprayed plots. The densities of
Orius spp. in permethrin-treated plots drastically declined soon after the spraing, and it took 2-3 weeks for the predators to recover. The result showed that
Orius spp. were efficient in suppressing
T. kanzawai populations.

Field experiments on control effects of organophosphates on, imported cabbageworm,
Pieris rapae, were conducted in Kishigawa, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan in 1991 and 1992. Of the organophosphates, protiofos and acephate were more effectiv to
P. rapae ; dichlorvos, phenthoate, naled, and trichlorfon were less effective.

Last-instar larvae of the bamboo zygaenid,
Balataea huneralis were collected in Kyoto city in early December, 1984 and reared under 16- and 12-hour photoperiodic conditions of 20°C. Results of the experiments strongly suggested that this zygaenid passes the winer in diapausing prepupae in Kyoto city.

Melon seedlings, collected from sand dune areas at Kumihama and Amino in Kyoto Prefecture in March, 1992, showed browning lesions at the basal part and wilting, followed by damping-off soon after transplanting. Examination of root pieces yielded only
Pythium spinosum P. spinosum and
P. irregulare were isolated from rhizosphere soil, while no such species were detected in non-rhizos-phere soil. Pathogenicity of these two species was determined on melon (cv. BONUS No.2 and Earl's Seinu Spring I) under greenhouse conditions. Two species were proved to pathogenic on both cultivars of melon.

Pythium aphanidermatum oospores germinated at relatively high temperature with high soil moisture, whereas
P. spinosum oospores behaved in the opposite way. Oospore germination of
P. aphanidermatum was depressed by increasing colonization of soil microorganisms in fresh plant residues and was also depressed with the time elapsed after burying oospores in the soil, while the germination stimulated in both cases of
P. spinosum.
