In Japan, cabbage plug seedling has been becoming popular and some nurseries are intensively producing a large amount of the seedling. Although Alternaria sooty spot has severely damaged the cabbage plug seedlings, any chemical agents have not been registered for the application to the disease in Japan. We tested the effect of 16 fungicides that are permitted to apply on cabbage, to the disease and growth of the pathogen in media. On the seedlings the fungicides including iprodione, tolclofos-methyl, procymidone, manzeb and TPN suppressed the symptom by preinoculation spraying with the conidial suspension of the pathogen. Manzeb or TPN completely inhibited conidial germination of the pathogen in a medium, whereas iprodione, tolclofos-methyl and procymidone did not. By the application 2 days after inoculation, iprodione, tolclofos-methyl, procymidone and manzeb suppressed development of the symptom, especially, the effect of procymidone was stable. There was no relationship between the disease suppression by the fungicides and growth inhibition of the pathogen in media containing the fungicides. In conclusion, we recommend the application of iprodione, tolclofos-methyl, procymidone or manzeb to control Alternaria sooty spot of cabbage.

Effects of covering house-side slit with 5.1 mm mesh size net on the common cutworm, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) were investigated on the garden pink, Dianthus spp. in a greenhouse in 2001. The number of S. litura larvae and damaged plants was lower in the covered house than in the control one. Temperature and humidity in covered houses with a net of 5.1 mm or 4.0×5.0 mm mesh size were same as control ones without ill effects on the garden pink or other bedding plants.

We inspected occurrence tendency of rice sting bugs in south frat area of Gifu Prefecture. We confirmed that 22 species of bugs occurred and that Stenotus rubrovittatus, Trigonotylus caelestialium, Cletus pucyiger and Eysarcoris aeneus related in production of stinged rice mainly. S. rubrovittatus was most important species, and it correlated closely with occupation rate of Lolium multiflorum on rice field ridge. Occurrence peak of S. rubrovittatus agreed with heading date of early-ripening rice. But population of bugs and stinged rice rate related to area of heading rice. Rhopalus maculatus and Leptocorisa chiensis, that are important species in mid-mountain area, had no relation to production of stinged rice in south flat area.

Seasonal occurrence of thrips was monitored weekly using blue sticky traps placed in fig orchards in Wakayama Prefecture. The western flower thrips, Flankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), which dominantly caused the damage of the fig fruit, showed a peak in mid- or late-June, whereas the other species of thrips peaked in late-May or early-June. Four experiments were conducted to determine the effect of reflective plastic mulch (reflective rate of more than 90%), covering the row, on the damage of fig fruit caused by thrips. The mulch prevented the thrips effectively from immigrating into the orchard, reducing the percentage of damaged fruit by one-third compared with the untreated plot.

Prevalence of Toxoptera aurantii was monitored in tea fields to compare the effectiveness of two trapping methods. Yellow water pan trap caught some alatae in May and few in the others. Yellow sticky trap set in a tea bush caught apterous adults, nymphs and exuvia in addition to alatae. Since the fluctuations of captured numbers by the yellow sticky trap reasonably elucidated events of the aphid, it was considered that the yellow sticky trap set in tea bush was suitable for monitoring T. aurantii.

Cabbage plug seedling has been popular in Japan and Alternaria sooty spot causes severe damage on them. Young seedlings of 20 cabbage cultivars were sprayed with conidial suspension of the pathogen and their susceptibilities to the disease were evaluated by severity of the symptom, which appeared in the cotyledons one week later. “Kagayaki” was the most resistant among them, but not complete. Most of the susceptible cultivars were resistant to Fusarium wilt, and many of the cultivars of spring and early summer cabbage were unstable in symptom severity of Alternaria sooty spot.
