ユーラシア大陸東縁の陸弧であった古日本列島は，およそ2500万年前に開始した四国海盆の拡大に追随した日本海の拡大に伴って，２つの島弧に分裂しつつ移動していった．およそ1500万年前に東北日本弧と西南日本弧はほぼ現在の位置に配置し，大陸の時代から弧状列島の時代へと移行した．しかし，日本列島の広い範囲はまだ海面下に没していて，いくつかの島が海面上に露出する時代が長く続いた．今日のような広い陸地が続く日本列島に成長したのは，およそ300万年前に始まった東西圧縮による．島弧地殻は東西に短縮し，逆断層に挟まれたブロックは隆起して山地となり，相対的に沈降した場所は堆積盆地となった．山地は浸食され，削剥された砕屑物が堆積盆地を埋積し，山間盆地や海岸平野が作られていった．第四紀を特徴づけるこの活動的な地殻変動の原因は長らく不明であったが，フィリピン海プレートの運動に伴う日本海溝の移動であることが明らかにされた．日本海溝の移動によって東北日本弧は西に移動し，日本海の海洋地殻に阻まれ地殻は東西に短縮する．その結果，内陸地震を引き起こす活断層が活動し，それらの運動の積分された結果が日本列島の今日の大地形である．

 那須烏山地域の地質を概観すると，中生代～中新世に形成された基盤岩類を前期更新世に形成された河川堆積物が覆っている．これらの地層を中期更新世以降，那珂川水系の各河川が侵食することによって地形が形成されてきた．未固結の砂礫層の上を自由蛇行しながら流れる時期には，河川は流域全体を削り比較的広い幅の谷を形成した．侵食が進行し硬い基盤岩類が削られるような時期になると，側刻が不活発になったため流路は変わりにくくなり，自由蛇行時の蛇行形態を維持したまま下刻が行われることになった．ただ，蛇行の攻撃斜面側では側刻が進行したため，川の湾曲の程度は強くなっていった．また，侵食が基盤岩に及び，流路の移動が行われにくくなると谷の中で地域的に離水面が生じ，下刻の進行とともに段丘が形成された．さらに，基盤岩類の中でも，侵食に対する抵抗性に違いがある地層の境界部に滝が生じている例がある．このような地形・地質に着目した隧道掘削や「川廻し」の工事が行われてきた．また，河川沿いに岩盤が露出し，広い谷と緩い河川勾配を持つ地形を利用しようとした「烏山ダム」についても紹介する．

 In the area of Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi Prefecture, many varieties of fossils including large marine mammal fossils such as whales and microfossils have been found. The 5^th grade, 6^th grade primary school, and 7^th grade junior high school students have field classes to observe these fossils and geologic layers. Nasukarasuyama Geopark Plan is promoted in this area. Their activities range from training teachers for supporting schools to conduct field observation classes for students.
 Minaminasu Junior High School has been working on this Geopark activities through science classes and field research as club activities by utilizing this appropriate learning environment. The few years’ experiences of the activities have led the Geopark Plan to get rooted naturally, and they are gradually starting to get results in the educational aspect.

 Ziphiid and chaeomysticete tympanic bullae from the upper Middle Miocene Taga Group of Kitaibaraki, central Japan, are described. The left tympanic bulla of Ziphiidae is the first description of tympanic bulla of this family from the North Pacific. Present ziphiid tympanic bulla has several derived characters, unlike Peruvian ziphiids of the Middle to Late Miocene. The left tympanic bulla of Chaeomysticeti is similar to several cetotheriids in semi-circular involucrar ridge. However, the main ridge of the present specimen is very weak. Therefore, this specimen is tentatively regarded as Chaeomysticeti fam. gen. et sp. indet. Two tympanic bullae add new data to the late Middle Miocene cetacean fauna of the Pacific coast of Japan. The late Middle Miocene to early Late Miocene fossil cetacean assemblages from North Kanto area including the Taga Group would be an important contribution to our understanding of cetacean faunal turnover in the end of the Middle Miocene.
