This study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of burnout and the active condition of life-style among medical and pharmacy students. A self-administered questionnaire survey on the mentioned determinants was performed among 62 medical students (46 males and 16 females) and 131 pharmacy students (69 males and 62 females) of second year. The subjects were divided into two groups (Burnout group, subjects with burnout or clinically depressive state ; Non-burnout group, subjects with healthy mind and body or signs of burnout). The results obtained were as follows. 1. Prevalence of burnout group among the male medical students (13.3%) was significantly lower than that among the male pharmacy students (30.8%). On the other hand, there were no significant differences in the prevalence of burnout between the female medical students (31.3%) and pharmacy students (36.1%). 2. Among the male medical students, the values of age and study time in a day were significantly higher (p<0.05 or p<0.01), and the values of sleeping time and score of Morimoto's life-style were significantly lower (p<0.05), compared with the male pharmacy students. On the other hand, among the female medical students, study time in a day were significantly longer (p<0.01), and the scores of Morimoto's life-style were significantly lower (p<0.05), compared with the females pharmacy students. 3. Prevalence of drinking among male medical students (60.8%) was significantly higher than that among male pharmacy students (40.6%, p<0.05).
