Considering the starting performance of the car and the driver's foot motion the ratio-x-of the maximum transmitting torque of the friction clutch-Mo-to the maximum engine torque-ME-(x=MC/ME) is determined. The results obtained are as follows. x≒1.5 for passenger car x≒2 for generally used truck.

Two methods of analyzing the indicator diagram (damping force-stroke diagram) of the shock absorber test are introduced. One is numerical and theother is graphical. The graphical method is of practical use but should be used when the disc to which the shock absorber is fixed is comparatively small. With the use of the graphical method, single-hole type shock absorbers (simplest type) were tested and the effects of piston diameter, hole diameter, and viscosity of damping oil on the damping factor were investigated.

Performance characteristics of the hydraulic coupling used as an automobile's clutch were investigated from a designer's view-point. The coupling is driven by a diesel engine and braked by a prony dynamometer. The starting characteristics were investigated particularly in detail. In this paper, the effects of the anti-drag baffle plats which prevent circulation flow of oil for lower r.p.m of the coupling and lessen the starting drag force on the car performance are mainly mentioned.

Crowning on gear tooth surfaces has proved satisfactory in insuring good tooth bearings and preventing high stresses at the end of teeth due to inevitable errors in machining and assembling as well as slight deflections of shafts etc. caused by working loads. So the authors have investigated a simple method of crowning spur and helical gears on conventional gear hobbing machines. The method is as follows : As the hob head is fed vertically downwards in the course of hobbing, the work table, on which the gear blank is mounted, is drawn gradually outwards at first and then fed inwards. That is, the depth of cut is changed gradually along the width of teeth, where a regular depth of cut is maintained at the middle of the face of the teeth and slightly deeper at both ends, thus inflating the tooth surfaces. Spur gears and helical gears crowned by this method were tested minutely, and their good tooth bearings and ideal gearing motion are shown clearly. The authors have also investigated the suitable amount of crowning in order to have the desired width of tooth bearing.

When the sharpening of a gear cuther is incorrect, various errors will occur on the hob ; (1) Errors of flute spacing. (2) Errors of helix angle of the flute. (3) Cutting face is not along a radial line. (4) Cutting face is not along a straight line. (5) Errors due to the diameter of hob becoming smaller after resharpened many times. This report deals with their effects on the accuracy of the sharpened gear cutter and that of the gear cut with this cutter, and also with a method of sharpening to make these errors as small as possible.

It is well known that the finishing condition of the race-surface of a roller bearing has a great effect upon the operation capacities of bearing and causes of noise and vibration thereof. In this study, the authors explain a method of applying super-finishing to the finish of the race surface and examine the results of the study. Conditions of the super-fiinishing work are as follows : 1. Frequency of vibration of grinder : 500 cycle/min∼1500 cycle/min. Amplitude of vibration : 2mm∼4mm. 2. Rotational speed of mechanism : 100∼300 r.p.m. 3. Pressur in working : 0.5kg∼1.8kg. 4. Quantity of grinding : 2μ∼10μ. These conditions are a little different according to the preceding process of the machining, but in general, it is considered better to adopt two stage work ; the first stage is the rough work in low speed and high presseur, and the second stage is the finishing work in high speed and low pressure. The grinders used are of 600 J and 800 I, and working time is about 1 min to 3.5 min. The result of testing the worked surface by the "Nikko profile meter" showed that a very smooth surface, where chatter-marks were completely removed, was obtained, and that noncrystalline layer was hardly seen.

The accuracy of machining of the raceway of a ball bearing affects its characteristics and life. In order to improve the accuracy of profile and surface smoothness of raceway and to get better efficiency of polishing, a new raceway polishing method, which is designed as a centreless lapping apparatus, has been devised. Practically the accuracy of profile and smoothness of raceway are improved with this method, and working efficiency has been improved because the cutting lines of lap cross the lines of grinding scratches. Systematically investigating various working conditions, such as material of lap, surfae speed of lap and work, lapping pressure, lapping powder, and change of cutting direction, the authors determined, the best working condition of this polishing method to get perfect mirror-finished raceways.

The purpose of this study is to determine the most efficient working condition of superfinish for cast iron, and to study the cutting mechanism of the superfinish. As a result of a systematic research on the various working conditions, such as abrasive grain, grain size, stone pressure, frequency and amplitude of the stone, surface speed of the work and viscosity of the cutting oil for the two-stage superfinish of cast iron, the following conclusions were obtained. (1) As the abrasive grain, GC grain is more suitable than WA grain. (2) For the first stage of superfinish, surface speed of the work of 13 m/min, stone pressure of 1.5∼2.0kg/cm2 and viscosity of the cutting oil of 1.7 Engler degree are suitable. For the second stage of superfinish, work speed of 34m/min, stone pressure of 1.0∼1.4kg/cm2 and the viscosity of 2.3 Engler degree are suitable. Concerning the grain size, the frequency and the amplitude of the stone, the same values are applicable for both cases. (3) The two-stage superfinish is effectively applicable for ground surface whose roughness is higher than 2μ. (4) By microscopic observation, it was found that the chip of superfinish takes the form of shear type. With the use of the above working conditions, it is possible to get a mirror-finished surface which is smoother than 0.1μ for cast iron.

The author has made a continuous study on the plastic bending of sheet metal by punch and die. In this report he has dealt with the deformation of the outer portion of the supports. This portion which has been bent within the supports is bent reversely by the punch when it comes out of the supports. Therefor, there is a need for the relation between the stress and strain when the plastically strained material is deformed by experiments, the force to deform the portion outside of the supports is given, and it agrees closely with experimental results on aluminium.

The characteristic equation of any control system has a form : X(s)=IIi (S2+2ζωnis+ωni2)×IIk (s+αk)=0. The following two assumptions are fulfilled in almost every practical case : 1) ζ1=min (ζi), 2) resonance curve of the system can be replaced by that of the first mode of oscillation of the response related with the term (s2+2ζ1ωn1s+ωn12) near the first resonant point. Under these conditions, ζ1 is used as the measure of Puality of control behavior of the system. Comparing the results from the treatment mentioned above with several examples by the other authors leads us to the favorable value for ζ1 ; i.e. ζ1=0.3∼0.4 for systems with off-set in their responses and ζ1=0.2∼0.3 for systems without off-set. These results agree considerably with conditions that Ferrell and Brown stated. Hall's statement seems to demand somewhat dull responses as compared with the results obtained by the author.

A certain type of temperature control of a penicilin cultivator can be regarded as a onepoint action, on-off temperature control of a single capacity process with dead time in its response. For analysis and synthesis of systems like the above it is very advantageous to use the phaseplane method with the aid of the time coordinates marked on the plane. The following table below shows satisfactory agreement between experimental data and calculated results. This agreement will allow us to elaborate a design plan by means of the phase-plane and the time coordinates. The author acknowledges Mr. T. Imao's kindness in offering his experimental data.

In this article the theoretical formulae for the life of rolling bearings in which the machining precision of balls or rollers are not good were treated and the following conclusions were obtained. (1) The worse the precision is the shorter is the life of the bearing. (2) The lighter the loading conditions are, the more remarkable is this tendency are. (3) With usual loading conditions, the precision used in practice today is sufficient. (4) The precision of balls are more important than that of rollers.
