    On account of the special features of the lathe turning of polygonal profile, the machining is permissible for certain definite sections, which are specified by the coeficient of eccentricity. These conditions shall be determined from the following several points. (1) The variation of rake angle and relief angle must be confined within the original front relief angle of lathe tool. (2) When the polygonal profile becomes concave, the machining is difficult and unpractical, and results in inaccuracy and weak strength. Therefore, we set the machining limit at this point, and further machining was discontinued. (3) To machine the accurate profile, we must restrict the inertia force of reciprocating mass. From this point, the maximum machining speed is determined.

    In this paper, we studied the problems about grinding of the shafts and bores with the polygonal profile sections. Grinding attachments were mounted on the lathe, and the operations were carried out with the peripheral surface of the grinding wheel (1) or the side surface of the cup-grinding wheel (2). The equations of the arc-enveloped polygonal profile (1) and the straightline-enveloped polygonal profile (2) were determined. In the arc-enveloped profile, the differences of the curve due to the variations of the diameter of grinding wheel were studied. About the interference of the profile, the relation between the dimention of wheel and radius of curvature of polygonal curve was obtained. The accuracy of the profile and the roughness of the surface were measured and compared with those of the shafts having the circular sections.

    The heating method used in hot machining affects the machinability, machining accuracy, protection for machine tool, cutting tool, and operator. Heating method used hitherto are flame heating, resistance heating, arc heating, induction heating, radiant heating, and others. These heating methods are advantageous in some respects, but require large heating apparatus. Some of them require protection for operator and some are high in initial and running costs. In this paper, a new heating method using friction between the work and shoes was presented. Experimental results showed that the friction heating method was very efficient for the purpose of heating the work materials. It produced a large amount of specific heat input. Both initial and running costs for it were low. Operating this heating apparatus was found safe.

    It is the purpose of this study to find out the mechanism of loading subject to underwater explosive forming. The authors carried out experiments on several items, and obtained the following results. (1) The action of the shock wave lasts for about several μs. Under this loading condition, the built-in circular plate is deformed into cone shape (1st pressure). (2) Bubble pulse is more statical than shock-wise, and the pressure caused by the stream of water is almost static. Therefore, if these pressures act together, the shape of the specimen changes from cone-shape to the spherical shape (2nd and 3rd pressures). (3) When the stand-off distance is constant, and the charge depth is varied, the degree of deformation of the metal plate and the impulse of pressure vary. (4) The most suitable depth of the charge is approximately equal to the maximum radius of expanding gas. Under this depth, the ratio of the first impulse to the sum of the second and the third impulses is 1 : 2.

    When the number of gear teeth becomes greater, the length of the entire error curve from the measuring method of gear accuracy by means of two feelers becomes longer, consequently the important merit of this method that the accuracy of the gear can be found by a glance tends to disappear, furthermore it may happen that the estimation of the gear accuracy is mistaken through the accumlation of superposing error. Expression of the gear accuracy by erron curves of some part of teeth is the suitable mode to grasp the accuracy of the gear and to save labor and time of the measurement. This expression by the extract inspection can be more accurate than the entire error curve, because superposing error is negligible.

    From the statistical point of view the individual errors of gears are considered to act according to a certain rule of distribution. The theoretical analysis of the rule, however, has not been made for a reason of complexity. This fact causes the difference among the standardized tolerances for individual errors adopted by some nations. The author investigated theoretically the rule of distribution of individual errors and studied the relationship between the accuracy of a gear and eligible probability under the given tolerance. According to the theory the rule of distribution is expressed as follows : [numerical formula] where f(x) stands for probability density function, x random variable, x0 integral variable and a stands for a constant which is determined theoretically by the number of teeth, the type of individual errors etc.

    The proper ratio among tolerances for individual errors of gears is obtained from the rule of distribution which was shown in Part 1, and the ratio among tolerances specified in JIS or DIN satisfies the result of the theoretical study. As the number of teeth becomes greater the measurment of accuracy on all teeth requires greater deal of labour, the method is presented to presume the maximum error in all teeth with the measurment on some part of teeth and the accuracy of the presumption is calculated. Hereupon, the extract inspection on the gear teeth which has been unsystematically performed becomes systematized.

    Since the cylinder lubrication condition of marine diesel engine recently becomes very severe, sometimes piston ring wears to an abnormal extent. Authors investigated the mechanism of abnormal wear and its preventive measures by analyzing the initial lubricating condition of piston rings. As a result they have come to the following conclusions : 1. Severance of lubrication condition at the end of the stroke causes ring scuffing and accelerates secondary abrasive wear with its hard abrasives. 2. Cylinder oil of high alkalinity makes hard sludges at high temperature and accelerates scuffing because of its poor thermal stability. 3. The characteristics of metal compound are major factors of the abnormal ring wears, but the effect of total carbon and silicon contents is little. 4. The use of chamfered ring or liner with machine-finished surfece is effective for the prevention of abnormal wear.
