    Nutritional environment for mycelial growth and fruit-body formation in Lentinus edodes was examined. The initial pH of medium around 5 was seemed to be optimal for both mycelial growth and fruiting. Glucose, maltose and starch were acceptable carbon sources for supporting mycelial growth and normal fruit-body development. However, the yield of fruit-bodies and the rate of maturation of fruit-bodies were decreased in the fructose and xylose media. Sucrose was a poor carbon source for this fungus, and it did not form fruit-bodies in the test condition. The fungus required organic nitrogen, such as peptone, casitone, yeast extract or amino acids mixture, for mycelial growth. Ammonium nitrogen could support mycelial growth, but nitrate nitrogen could not be utilized by the fungus. Optimal concentration of carbon and nitrogen sources for fruiting were estimated to be 3〜5% and 0.2〜0.3%, respectively. The addition of lignin into the basal medium remarkably enhanced mycelial growth and fruiting. On the other hand, the omission of this substrate might cause the failure in fruit-body development. The optimal lignin concentration in the medium for fruiting was estimated to be 0.2%.
