The bacterial sheath brown rot of rice plant caused by
Pseudomonas fuscovagivae has occurred only in Hokkaido district. In 1976, however, the simillar disease occurred in Aomori and Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district.
The 11 isolates from diseased plants were tested. They were pathogenic on both seedling and booting stage of rice plants. The symptoms inoculated by them were very simillar to those caused by
P. fuscovaginae and
P. oryzicola.
Bacteriological characteristics of these isolates are as follows. Fluoresent pigment is produced. Kovac's oxidase activity, arginine dihydrolase activity and lypolytic activity are positive. Levan is not produced. Pit formation on polypectate gel, and β-glucosidase activity are negative. Acid is not produced from sucrose.
Anti
P. fuscovaginae 6801 serum agglutinated the flagellar antigen of 11 isolates on slide reaction.
8 of 11 isolates were sensitive to P. 1 phage of
P. fuscovaginae by plaque count method.
From these results, it is concluded that 11 isolates obtained from Aomori and Yamagata prefectures are not
P. oryzicola but
P. fuscovaginae.

The sampling method for the survey of rice blast, rice sheath blight, rice stem borer and rice stem maggot was studied from 1971 to 1976 in the Akita prefecture. About 125 fields were sampled from the paddy fields in the area of the Akita prefecture, and the damages by each rice pest in 25 hills were examined at each field.
The results of examinations by the sampling method roughly corresponded with the abundance of each rice pest estimated by general subjective method. The sampling method seemed to be available to estimate the annual fluctuations of mean incidence rate of each rice pest and the acreages infested with that in every year.
The differences among the data obtained by different examiners and the efficiency of examinations were discussed.

Rice plants from the following five types of seedling were compared with one another in the severity of downy mildew.
(A) Direct sowing (no use a nursery bed)
(B) Rice seedling grown at rearing case (young seedling for mechanical transplanting)
(C) Rice seedling grown at upland nursery
(D) Rice seedling grown at semi-irrigated nursery
(E) Rice seedling grown at flooded nursery
Plants grown in pots were inoculated by a dipping method at the 7 th to 12 th leaf age.
In general, the incidence was the highest in rice plant from (A) and the lowest in (E). Rice plant from (B) was infected slightly at young growth stage but the disease intensity increased later. Whereas, rice plants from (C) and (D) were infected heavily at first but with the progress of leaf age the intensity decreased. This seemed to be owing to the differences of tillering capacity in these rice plants. A close negative correlation between the grain yield and the ratio of infected tiller was observed in rice plants from each seedling infected before the maximum tiller number stage. The reduction of ear number by the infection was a main factor of yield decrease.

The present paper deals with the results of the ecological investigations during the period of pasturing in 1976 on the muscid flies associated with cattle in the vicinity of Sapporo, Hokkaido.
A total of 2, 601 muscid flies were caught. These included six non-biting species (2, 312 flies) and two biting species (289 flies). The morst numerous were
Musca bezzii and
Haematobia irritans.
According to the observations, non-biting species especialy
Musca bezzii began to increase rapidlyat the early June, while the appearance of adults on cattle was kept during from July to September and decreased rapidly from the early October. They disappeared entirely at the middle of November.
Bitingspecies (
Haematobia irritans) began to increase at the early July and made a peak in August. They disappeared entirely at the middle of October.
Non-bitingspecies showed peak in appearance during daytime and biting species showed two peaks in appearance in the early morning and at dusk.
