Four rice cultivars with different levels of field resistance to rice blast were grown under three conditions of disease severity. The higer levels of field resistance reduced the yield loss caused by panicle blast. The difference of yield loss between a resistant cultivar Toyonishiki and a susceptible cultivar Sasanishiki increased with increasing panicle blast severity. Even under the severest condition of panicle blast where 90% spikelets of Sasanishiki were infected and it suffered 40 to 50 % loss of yield, Toyonishiki maintained more than 80% of yield of the control.

The simulation model of rice blast development was composed from the relationship among the plant growth, the host resistance, the behaviour of the causal spores and weather conditions. When the weather records met in past years following by the present data set up into the model, the output indicated available information to predict securely the disease progression for about 7 days as coincident with latent periods, and showed the disease progress range for the further days.

were tested by using the varieties, Toyonishiki (r) and Sasanishiki (s), and chemicals, Probenazole and Isoprothiolane, in several combinations each other. The combinations of varieties and chemicals were effective except that of Sasanishiki and chemical application 14 days before heading. The disease severity in Toyonishiki with no chemical application was almost the same as those in Sasanishiki with twice chemical applications at the time before occurrence of leaf blast and 14 days before heading.

The spores of Ustilago coicis Bref. germinated at temperature of 10°C to 35°C, and optimum at 30 to 35°C. The spores excellently germinated on both potato sucrose agar medium and 2% crude agar medium, also under both total darkness and illuminated condition. The spores lost their germinability when treated at 54°C for 10 minutes in hot water; and they lost it when treated at 75°C for 6 days, at 80°C for 3 days, at 85°C for 2 days and 90°C for one day in an oven.

Smut disease of Job's tears caused by
Ustilago coicis Bref., was effectively controlled when infected seeds were dipped into the suspension of benomyl at 500ppm a. i. for 3 days, and coated with thiuram-benomyl or thiuram-thiophanate methyl at 0.5%per weight of seed, each before seeding. Germination of the fungal spore was completely inhibited on the media containing thiuram-benomyl or thiuram-thiophanate methyl. Benomyl did not inhibit the germination (promycelial elongation), but inhibited the production of sporidia on the promycelia.

Fifteen isolates of P.
megasperma var. sojae collected from Hokkaido and Yamagata prefecture were inoculated to the seedlings of cultivars of soybean including 8 differentials reported by Laviolette and 10 Japanese commercial cultivars. Three Japanese cultivars i. e. Gedenshirazu No.1, Ohoju, Toyosuzu were resistant to the all isolates. Nine isolates were tested for reaction to the differentials. Two isolates were race 5 and 7, respectively, and the others seemed to be new races.

In the laboratory tests, four chemicals perfectly inhibited the mycelial growth of
Helicobasidium mampa Tanaka. They were commercial grades of Ca (OH)
2, CaO+MgO, Ca (C10)
2, and reagent grade of Ca (NO
3)
2. For a practical reason, only the former two were examined in their curative effect on the infected apple tree in the orchard. It is considered that Ca (OH)
2 is effective on the disease, but CaO +MgO requires further examination.

The number of annual generations of
T. hemipterus in Fukushima prefecturewas estimated from investigation of ovarial development and quadrat method in the field. Female adults having mature ovaries Were observed twice in a season. Soon after the appearence of matured female, peaks of larvae were found by quadrat method in the field. From these results it is clear that
T. hemipterus occures twice in a year.

The seasonal prevalence of
Hylemia antiqua, H. platura and
Eumerus spp. on onion was investigated with onion pulp trap during from 1979 to 1981 at Sapporo district. The number of collected adult and the peaks of occurrence fluctuated by year, but the most probable number of occurrence appeared two or three for
H. antiqua, three for
H. platura, two for
Eùmers spp. Emergence of the former two species was also recognized at the isolated field surrounded by the wood-hill and separated approximately 3km from the testing onion field.
