    1) A technique for obtaining infective eggs of S. muris is described.
    2) The experimental life cycle of S. muris in the albino rat is outlined, and observations on the growth and development of the pinworm presented in tabular form.
    3) The significance of retrofection as a mode of infection of the rat hosts with S. muris is discussed.
    4) A procedure for infecting pinworm-free rats is described, with emphasis placed on the ease, convenience, and application of the procedure. Finally, mention is made of the potential this host-parasite combination holds for future investigation.

    1. The author reports a case of epignathus associated with intracranical teratoma in a prematurely born female infant.
    2. The epignathus arising from the upper lip comprised ecto and mesodermal tissue.
    3. The intracranial teratoma located at the base of the skull anterior to the sella turcica consisted of three germinal layers.
    4. No macroscopic connection was recognized between these two lesions.
    5. The origin and inter-relationship of the two lesions were discussed with a survey of the related Japanese literature.

    Using Yanagita's activity-level counter, effects of morphine administration upon the spontaneous activities of rats under various conditions were studied. And the following facts were elucidated;
    1. It was shown numerically that the more the size of the dose was large and the more the duration of morphine repetition was long, the faster and the stronger their spontaneous activities became.
    2. Such changes of the spontaneous activities of rats due to the repeated administration of morphine can be regarded as one the signs of tolerance.
    3. The changes of the spontaneous activities of rats or some sorts of tolerance occur as fast as the appearance of physical dependence.
    4. The mechanisms by which rats become hyperactive by the repeated administration of morphine may be explained chiefly by the development of tolerance to the sedative action of morphine and by the absence of tolerance to the excitatory action of the drug. However, the extraordinary increases recognized by the long term repetition of morphine request us further studies.
    5. As far as slow morphinization of rats is adopted, the abstinent phenomenon of the morphinized rats is sedation.
    6. The disappearance of tolerance after the cessation of morphine administration occurs very late, far later than the disappearance of abstinent phenomenon.
    7. Frequent administrations of nalorphine to the morphinized rats can not shorten the duration of tolerance retention after the cessation of the medication.

    The cystic dilatation of the glomerular tuft due to the mesangiolysis was noted after the intravenous injection of the “Habu snake” venom (2mg per kg of body weight) into the rabbits. A total of 45 rabbits were used in this experiment and were sacrificed at selected intervals from a half to ten hours after the injections.
    The results obtained are as follows:
    1. The initial change of the mesangiolysis is the decreased density of the mesangial matrix and successively small canaliculi formation in this area is noted.
    2. The vacuolar swelling of the cytoplasmic processes of the mesangial cells is prominent. Some of them are seen beneath the endothelium, but others are pushing aside the endothelium and project into the capillary lumina.
    3. In the next stage, the mesangial cells get to be in direct contact with the blood stream and their cytoplasm projects into the capillary lumina becoming flattened along the basement membrane. These findings would suggest the differentiation of the mesangial cells to the endothelium after the dissolution of the mesangial matrix by the venom.
    4. Ultimately, the cystic dilatation of the glomerular tuft was observed.
    5. In contrast to the easy dissolution of the mesangial matrix, the basement membrane shows only decreased density. This fact strongly suggests the qualitative difference between the two.
    6. The findings of mesangiolysis and cystic dilatation in the glomerulus suggest that the glomerular tufts might be composed of sinus-like structure.
