Various fats were given in albino rats to determine the fatty acid in depot fat and cholesterol ester in the liver and serum and following results were obtained.
1. The fatty acid composition of depot fat was always constant upon ingestion of various fats. Firstly, the ratio between total saturated fatty acid and total unsaturated fatty acid in depot fat was always approximately 1:2.
Secondly, Cio acid, C
12 acid and C
14 acid, were always contained in the depot fat although these were not contained in the ingested fat.
Thirdly, upon ingestion of saturated fatty acids, the corresponding mono-unsaturated fatty acid always showed an increase in depot fat.
2. The intake of fatty acid from the exogenous cholesterol esters of in-gested fat is rather complex.
3. However, the similarity in fatty acid composition between endogenous cholesterol ester and depot fat indicated in 1 might indicate that the intake of fatty acid to the ester from the ingested fats does not take place in a straight forward way, but through the fatty acid of depot fat type (fatty acid recon-structed to be suitable for deposition).
