Until today, the number of patients who became pregnant following arti- ficial insemination with frozen semen (frozen AID) has accumulated and reached 191 since 1958, first time in Japan, 4 pregnancies following frozen AID were reported by the physicians of our clinic.
The author demonstrated, from the clinical point of view, that frozen AID is of clinical importance and genetically safe in treating infertility, especially male infertility, through the observations of the pregnant courses following frozen AID and subsequent development of the children.
Out of the 191 cases, we could follow up to 133. There was no apparent increase in the incidence of stillbirths or spontaneous abortions when compared with the rate expected in the population. Nor was there major malformation in children born from frozen AID. The sex ratio was found to be increased as a result of AID, which is contrary to the results reported by most of investigators. The development of many of the children was followed, and it was demonstrated that both physical and mental development of children whether from fresh semen or from frozen semen, tended to be superior to that of those naturally born.
Thus, present work on AID shows that its benefits outweigh its risks.
