The heterogeneity of cell line KU-2 derived from human renal cell carcinoma was studied utilizing single cell cloning method. Thirteen sublines named N-1-N-13 were yielded.
Observed morphologically as time lapsed, N-13 was different from other sublines in that it was a group of cells, spindle in shape maintained throughout, with a lower nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio and did not tend to pile up, with lower saturation density and long generation time.
Transmission electron microscopy showed different characteristics of each subline in the degree of development of cell surface microvilli and the amount of glycogen granules and lipid droplets in cytoplasm.
Karyotype analysis of the sublines showed 6 different modal chromosome numbers, but all of the sublines had common marker chromosomes, while clone N-5 had a proper giant metacentric marker chromosome.
Generation time determined by the fraction of labeled mitosis method ranged from 18.7 hr (N-10) to 25.6 hr (N-3), so did growth fraction from 0.83 to 1.00.
Cloning of KU-2 cell line revealed its heterogeneity detecting sublines with different biological properties. Subsequent separation of individual sublines with different cell kinetics from the heterogenous cell populations would provide clues to clarification of the role of cell kinetics in relation to other biological phenotypes of cancer cells.

An open clinical trial of caerulein diethylamine, a cholecystokinin analogue, was performed in a total of 58 chronic schizophrenic patients maintained on drugs such as antipsychotic agents without dosage modification. The neuro-peptide medication by intramuscular route produced a clinical improvement in 20 cases and was eventually assessed to have been of therapeutic value in 23 cases. Clinical responses to the medication observed in the present series in-cluded: subjective changes in mood mostly to become feeling “fine” or “re-freshed in the head”, improvement in contact, increased spontaneity and objective behavioral changes such as restlessness and excitement. These features of clinical responses observed in respect of mental condition seem to indicate that the drug affects emotion and exerts an analeptic effect as its principal clinical effects. The clinical effects were remarkably long sustained for 1-2 weeks after a single i.m. dose in most responders. Feeling of facial warmth and lassitude as well as symptoms of the gastrointestinal system were encountered as attendant symptoms in 6 cases.

Natural intercourse (NI) or artificial insemination (AI) was performed in 17 cooperative couples, whose infertility might be due to inadequate patency of tube in the periovulatory or ovulatory phases, before tubal plastic surgery was carried out. Successive examinations were made for the presence and motility of sperm in the oviduct during the surgery.
    (1) Among the AI group if insemination was performed 2 hours-4 days before the operation, sperms were present in the oviduct.
Among the NI group if the couple had intercourse 2 to 4 days before the operation, sperms were present in the oviduct.
    (2) There was no significant difference between the patients in whom in-adequate patency of tube was found and the control group, in the groups excluding hydrosalpinx (HYD) group, as far as the presence of sperm in oviduct is concerned.
In the HYD group, the rate of the presence of sperm was low and in the group in which chronic inflammation of the oviductal lumen was observed histologically, few motile sperms were seen in vivo.
    (3) Successive observation of normal sperm in vitro in HYD fluid, serum, Tyrode's solution, seminal plasma, and physiological saline showed marked decreease in the sperm motility rate in HYD fluid and physiological saline.
    (4) As an important factor of these phenomena, it is recommended that lowering of glucose concentration and albumin concentration in HYD fluid is considered.

Echocardiographic study was performed in ten patients with accidental hypothermia to investigate the hypothermic effects on cardiac activities. The intervals from the onset of the posterior wall forward movement to the peak of the forward excursion (C-D interval) and from the peak of the forward excursion to the end of the early diastolic filling (D-F interval) were pro-longed in hypothermia. The interval from the initial deflection of the QRS complex to the onset of the posterior wall forward movement (Q-C interval) was not prolonged. Maximal systolic and diastolic endocardial velocity was decreased in hypothermia. These abnormal findings were remarkable in mod-erately deep hypothermia (<26°C), and returned toward normal as the body temperature rose. Stroke volume was low in three cases, while normal in others. The stroke volume did not change significantly as the body tempera-ture rose. All these findings are similar to the data which have been obtained in experimental conditions.
From these results, there seems to be a marked delay in the ability of the heart muscle to contract and relax in accidental hypothermia. This delay appeared to be produced mainly by hypothermia itself although many other factors must be considered to have influenced these results.

Study on biological behaviors of human carcinoma cells with special em-phasis placed on intercellular and cell-to-matrix adhesiveness of cultured cells was undertaken. Characterization of five different cell lines derived from bladder carcinoma was morphologically determined utilizing monolayer, rota-tion and collagen sponge matrix culture. Also determined were distribution and quantification of fibronectin in cells and cultured media by immuno-fluorescence technique and immunoelectrophoresis.
The results showed that regardless of the culture technique employed, distinct morphological characteristics of cellular arrangement and surface of the cells, which well corresponded to the grade of the original carcinoma of the bladder. The adhesiveness tended to be inversely proportional to grade of the original carcinoma, however, KU-7 derived from low grade carcinoma was shown to have decreased adhesiveness and increased amount of fibronectin in its culture media compared with other four cell lines.
These results indicate a close association of adhesiveness of cultured cells with cellular malignancy and its proliferation. Studies of tumor cell adhesive-ness may thus provide insight into the mechanism of local tumor growth and dissemination to form distant metastasis.
