It is often experienced that when diabetic children suffer from infections, the control of diabetes becomes difficult. It seems important to pay attention to the host defense mechanisms of diabetic patients. Some previous reports showed granulocyte dysfunctions in patients with diabetes. An integrated investigation regarding this problem was carried out.
Chemotactic activity, random mobility, deformability, NBT dye reduction and adherence of granulocytes were measured in 20 patients suffering from insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.
Chemotaxis was impaired significantly (0.66 ± 0.33 to the healthy con-trol). NBT dye reduction and adherence were normal. Random mobility and deformability were also normal, as a whole, but several subjects showed im-paired functions.
The fasting blood glucose level, the daily amount of glucosuria, the glycosylated hemoglobin level, the daily insulin requirement and the duration from the onset of the disease were chosen as indices of the clinical state of diabetes in order to see the correlations with the granulocyte functions. As a result, no significant relationship was found between granulocyte functions and these indices.

In 41 patients with inoperable gastric cancers undergoing immunotherapy with the streptococcal preparation OK-432 in combination with FT207, the peripheral blood lymphocyte count and its T-cell ratio, delayed hypersensitivity skin tests with purified protein derivative, phytohemagglutinin and polysac-charide extracted from Su strain of Streptococcus pyogenes and serum titer of agglutinin to Strep. pyogenes were followed sequentially and the data were statistically analyzed for correlations of these tests with the rate and duration of survival in order to re-evaluate these immunological parameters commonly used at present in anticancer immunotherapy. In respect of all parameters except the T-cell ratio of peripheral blood lymphocytes and phytohemagglutinin skin test assessed at 2 months of treatment, patients showing normal values or positive tests had a significantly greater survival rate a compared with those showing abnormal values or negative tests. Particularly, the Su-PS skin test and serum titer of agglutinin to Strep. pyogenes showed remarkably close correlations (P < 0.001) with the survival rate and duration of the tumor-bearing patients.

The authors undertook a survey among senior high school students in an ordinary high school and delinquents in a reformantry concerning the corre-lation among three behaviours. Those are: 1. overt deliquency, 2. predelin-quent acts (drinking and smoking in particular), 3. delinquent behaviour in fantasy. Results follow, 1. The sense of alienation is quite common among Japanese adolescents (around 80%), which might give rise to recently increas-ing predelinquent acts and overt delinquency. 2. Tendencies to seeking fantasy and self-destruction were more related with delinquents in the reformatory. 3. Tendencies to rebellion were more related with general high school students. 4. The delinquents tend to lack selfconfidence in behaving in constructive ways, which may give rise to some suggestions about the treatment of the delin-quents.

An attempt was made to treat recurrence of primary lung cancer at the primary site (left upper lobe, S1+2c) in an elderly patient who had previously been treated by fractionated X-ray irradiation.
After dermal incision, we carried out intraoperative electron beam irra-diation two times at respective doses to the disease focus of 40 Gray and 60 Gray. The effect of this treatment proved superior to that of the previous treatment and the symptoms remain palliated for a longer period of time.
Also, in the right upper lobe which received a single dose of 60 Gray, the S2b metastatic site became fibrotic and disappeared. The side-effects due to massive electron beam irradiation were slight. Ouing to both its efficacy and safety, this method seems likely to be a curative therapeutic modality for treating small, localized peripheral lung cancers.
