    The writers found that mature cell-walls of mosses and some liverworts could be stained with some basic dyes : orcein, carmine, lacmoid, giemsa, safranin, methylene blue, methyl green and azure B. On the other hand, this juvenile cell-walls could be stained with some acidic dyes : anilin blue, light green and congo red. For the determination of cellulose and uronic acid content in the cell-walls, cell-wall materials isolated from gametophytes of nine species of mosses and liverworts were used. Results indicate that fundamental differences in cellulose and uronic acid content did not exist among the six moss species and three liverwort species. However, the cellulose and uronic acid content was significantly higher in the thalloid liverwort (Conocephalum) than in the leafy liverworts (Bazzania and Plagiochila).

    A comparative study on the isozyme peroxidase patterns of 37 moss species belonging to four groups was made by using starch gel electrophoresis. The four groups were Thuidium (4 species), Hypnum (6 spp.), Fissidens (11 spp.), and Mniaceae (16 spp.). In most of these species the zymograms showed a very small number of bands, one or two, and they were different from those of the higher plants which had a large number of bands. In some groups, such as Thuidium and Mniaceae, the principal results obtained from the intra and interspecific comparisons of the isozyme patterns appeared to be in fairly good agreement with those of the previous karyological or taxonomical studies. In the other group, Hypnum species showed considerable variability, and it seemed to be useful for the analysis of population. From this study it was concluded that the usefulness of isozyme patterns in the taxonomy of bryophytes seemed to be varied from group to group.

    Hepaticae produce some characteristic compounds as major components: among them, terpenoids are very significant chemosystematic markers at different taxonomic levels. From the chemical evidence, the following results have been obtained: 1) the chemical constitution of Hepaticae is clearly different from that of Musci. 2) Metzgeriales were possibly originated from the same ancestor as Jungermanniales. The Marchantiales belong to another evolutionary line. 3) Anthocerotae are more related to Hepaticae than to Musci. 4) Radulaceae and Plagiochilaceae each have isolated chemical characteristics. 5) Ptilidiaceae, Trichocoleaceae and Porellaceae seem to have some affinities to each other in chemical components. 6) There seems to be no chemical affinity between Porellaceae and Frullaniaceae, but some species of Porellaceae are similar to some genera of Lejeuneaceae. 7) In Metzgeriales, Blasiaceae and Metzgeriaceae each have isolated chemical characters. 8) In Marchantiales, Ricciaceae is a very isolated family in chemical components. Conocepahlum supradecompositum seems to be a more primitive species than Wiesnerella denudata and C. conicum from the chemical point of view.

    1) The rhizoid systems of the Polytrichaceae were examined, utilizing mainly indigenous material of various species. 2) In Atrichum rhystophyllum the system consists of two types of rhizoids. The first type is slender (less than 10μ thick), tapering, and so numerous and interwoven as to cover the whole surface of the underground portion of the stems. The second type is thick (12-20μ, not tapering, growing horizontally, brownish with age, and rather few in number. 3) Only the second type forms rhizoid bundles which are frequently branched and freely develop new erect shoots. Thus the aerial shoots in a mat are connected under-ground by the rhizoid bundles-in this respect the mat is a miniature of a bamboo thicket and a mat (not a single shoot) should be regarded as an individual. 4) The bundle is always dextrorsely twisted like a right-handed rope. This is true not only in Atrichum rhystophyllum but also in all other examined species of the genus including exotic ones. 5) The thick bundle often consists of more than 100 filaments. The inner filaments are united to each other and form a "tissue" like medulla. 6) The rhizoid bundles are present in all examined species of Oligotrichum, Pogonatum, Polytrichastrum and Polytrichum-even in Pogonatum spinulosum where the protonema is persistent and the gametophore is highly reduced. In these genera the twining is not so distinct but filaments in a bundle run almost straight and nearly parallel to each other. 7) The rhizoid system of Bartramiopsis lescurii is quite different from that of other genera. The rhizoids are very thick (up to 35-40μ, deep reddish brown and bearing numerous papillae on the surface. Distinct rhizoid bundles are not found but the thick rhizoidal filaments are often covered by slender (3-5μ thick), hyphae-like branches which are variously oriented.
