Sporophytes of Zygodon viridissimus (Dicks.) Brid. var. rupestris Lindb. ex Hartm. were found at the foot of Mt. Shirane, central Japan, which was the first record of them in Japan. Based on these specimens, sporophytic charcters are described as follows. Dioicous. Calyptra cuculate, naked. Seta 2.8-3.4 mm long, sinistrorsely twisted above, dextrorsely below. Capsules yellowish brown, erect, cylindric, 1.4-1.5×0.4-0.6 mm, slightly contracted below mouth, sulcate when dry; exothecial cells rectangular, those near mouth smaller and transversely elongate; stomata present at base of urn; operculum obliquely rostrate; peristome rudimentary, papillose. Spores anisosporous (?); larger ones green and 20-24μm in diameter, and smaller ones yellowish brown and 8-14μm in diameter. Sporophytes of Zygodon viridissimus var. rupestris matured in October and November in central Japan. All capsules observed containe a few, large, green spores (20-24μm in diameter) and numerous, small, yellowish brown spores (8-14μm in diameter) that may be aborted, thus representing false anisospory.
