Tnomas Lickona has advocating the idea of character education in the U.S.A. It is an attempt to cultivate good morals and ethics in students. In Japan, his work and ideas on character are being translated. The reason Mr. Lickona is advocating character development is its effective approach in developing children’s moral character and ethical behavior. In particular, I am interested in how these ideas have been used in American classes, and how to introduce them into Japanese classes.

The purpose of the present paper is to classify the high temperature stress tolerance of the differences among the cultivars of scarlet sage [Salvia splendens Sell ex Roem. & Schult.], and the flooding and drought stress tolerance of the typical bedding plants under high temperature condition. Principal component analysis of the plant height ratio and the dry weight of aerial part ratio (high temperature treatient/ordinary temperature treatment)resulted in first principal component. The first principal component from principal analysis indicated the high temperature stress tolerance. According to the scores on first principal component, 5 cultiVars(’Faora’,‘Flamex 2000’,’Carabiniere Scarlet,’Carabiniere Violet' and 'Sizzler Burgundy') of scarlet sage have the high temperature stress tolerance. In high temperature time of the rainy season period (from June 5th to July 27th), Calandrinia umbellate, Cathranthus roseus‘Tropicana Bright Eye’,Gaillardia aristata ‘Dwarf, Nierembergia hippomanica var. violacea‘Purple Robe', Rudbeckia hirta 'Sonora’and Tagetes patula ‘March Yellow' have both the flooding stress tolerance and the drought stress tolerance. In high temperature time of all season (from June 5th to Septenber 12th), Gaillardia aristata‘Dwarf’and Nierembergia hippomanica var. violacea‘Purple Robe' have the high adaptation of the environment.

We investigated the growth and flowering characteristics of interspecific hybrids between Echium wildpretii H.Pearson ex Hook.f. and E. pininana Webb & Berth. (Chiltern Seeds in England). The plant height of hybrids plants was from 276 cm (maximum)to 149 cm (minimum). The earliest plant of the flowering flowered on April 23rd. The flowering period of hybrid plants was about 50 days. The total flower numbers per plant of hybrids was from about 90000 (maximum) to 8000 (minimum). The hybrid plants were classified into 3 clusters by cluster analysis using plant height, circumference of middle part of inflorescence, flower numbers per plant and leaf ratio.
