Many reports on the lip-furrow-band have been described so far, but none on its development and growth in detail. This study was made to investigate the origin of the development of tooth band and the lip-furrow-band which develops almost concurrently with the tooth band and to investigate the origin and developing process of the lip-furrow-band.
Fetus of the pigs were used as materials. Serial sections and some reconstruction models were made from the fetus of various size in various developing stages. On the contrary, unfixed fresh materials were infused in dilute acetic acid and dissected carefully to leave only the epithelial part as it was for the purpose of observing tooth band and lip-Turrow-band in their solid state.
The results obtained were as follows:
    1. Lip-furrow-band develops separately from the tooth band on its lateral side somewhat later than the tooth band.
    2. Lip-furrow-band develops separately in its anterior part and posterior part in the beginning stage.
    3. The anterior part appears earlier than the posterior one.
    4. The anterior part develops separately in right and left sides of the jaws, and nothing can be found in the midline.
    5. The anterior part develops first on the lateral side of the tooth band directly, while the posterior one somewhat farther lateral side of the tooth band.
    6. Both parts of the lip-furrow-band show the conjunction in the following state: the anterior band temporarily extends laterally to the posterior one, uniting with each other after disappearance of extending parts soon.
    7. As the developmental stage progresses, the middle portion of both bands, goes apart laterally. But separation of lip-furrow-band and tooth band is delayed at the anterior and posterior ends of both parts which have appeared in the later stage than the middle portions.
    8. Union of right and left anterior lip-furrow-bands in the midline, can be seen after the union of anterion and posterior bands.
    9. Primitive lip-furrow appears after an appearance of lip-furrow-band. Primitive lip-furrow and lip-furrow cannot be made in at the upper media, , part, but only a slight hollow can be made. In the posterior end of posterior lip-furrow-band primitive lip-furrow is made on the same part of the tooth furrow.

Sixteen cases, 5 males and 11 females, of hyperplastic gums resulting from aleviatin administration were histologically studied, and the pathogenesis of the gingival hyperplasia was discussed. The histological examination revealed much identity to the previous observations. However, the authors could not derermine whether in the beginning state of the gingival enlargement the inflammatory cell infiltration occurred or not.

An epileptic female patient with hemiplegia, aged 20 years, presented a unilateral gingival hyperplasia after taking dilantin for about one year. This hyperplasia could bef dund remarkably on the paralytic side and slightly on the unparalytic side. When dilantin was administered to her after gingivectomy, the same unilateral hyperplasia occurred again.
