Ethofenprox EW 10%, a kind of pyrethroid, was sprayed with two doses: low-volume application (250 liters/ha of 83.3
ml ai) and conventional-volume application (1, 200 liters/ha of 120
ml ai) to clarify their effects on arthropods fauna in a direct seeding rice field in Shintone, Ibaraki Pref. (ca. 35°50°, 142°20°) in 1995. Numbers of pecky rice grains,
Nephotettix cincticeps, Oxya yezoensis, and
Parnara guttata were reduced in the test field of low-volume application. Numbers of
Orius nagaii and spider,
Tetragnatha maxillosa were not reduced by the application, comparecd with conventional-volume application. Therefore, low-volume application proved to be a practical control method.
Leptocorisa chinensis migrated into the rice fields in late July before the ear heading period. It is considered as well that larvae of the rice bug during mid and late August would cause the occurrence of pecky rice grains in this region.
