At Kumamoto National College of Technology, Yatsushiro, students usually have study tours in their 4th grade. They visit engineering facilities including factories, plants, construction sites and so on as well as cultural heritages. Nowadays, an increasing number of KOSENs send their students abroad as their study tours, though students of our campus did not have any chance to go abroad for their 4th year trip. Therefore, the department of Mechanical and Intelligent Systems Engineering planned overseas study tours and their first tour to Singapore was held in 2012. In 2013, students are supposed to visit Singapore followed by Taiwan. It is highly expected that this kind of visit contributes a lot for students to acquire global points of view.

In this study, an evaluation program which calculates the reduction in fuel and light expenses and carbon footprint for energy-saving renovation with no black-box was developed. By comparing with the other programs, following results were obtained.(1)The program calculates smaller reduction in fuel and light expenses than that by other programs, though the difference is small.(2)Carbon dioxide emission facter obtained by the program is similar to that published by electric power company.

We carried out special lectures as First Year Experience because students except the first choice are included in the department of Architecture and Civil Engineering(AC)of Kumamoto National College of Technology. As a result of investigating the effects of First Year Experience for three years, it was revealed that the students’will for learning increased more just after the admission, and the purposes of the study of students were different every year. In particular, even if it was not the first choice, the results of final examinations were good in the 3rd AC-Class. They had ambition and consciousness of the contribution to society as the engineer.

STAVi is the personal mobility vehicle that has some useful functions for handicapped persons. Therefore it will be effective to support a handicapped student in schools. However, it is a prototype machine whose is not assumed to use at school, so it is necessary to improve the mechanism and function. In this study, as the first step of universalizing educational environment using STAVi, the situation where STAVi was used was confirmed by the fabricated simulator and actual running test. As the second step, the speed change system that is according to the distance to the object and the presence or absence of a difference in level was made using an ultrasonic sensor, infrared sensors and an Arduino Leonardo. The collision of the STAVi and pedestrians or going off the shoulder of the road is avoided by this method. As a result, the safety of STAVi was enhanced.

LCD screens are used in VDT work and TV viewing. Study of visibility is often from the perspective of ecological psychology. This paper describes the results of the research the relationship between human sensibility and physical indicators. Focusing on color character information, engineering evaluation and analysis of visibility are conducted. The primary purpose of this study is to show the equations by a quantitative analysis of the relationship between the visibility of the character information and background color. The second purpose, through the evaluation and analysis of LCD visibility, is to clarify the research methods of engineering control technology for information display in electronic information equipment system, and to deepen the understanding of this field.

Overmuch closed condition of housing unit is thought to be causally related to an unattended death of elderly people in urban housing. This study demonstrates the requirements to ensure the compatibility between privacy and community in housing units. As the result of research on three different types of housing units and complex in Yatsushiro city, the requirements are as follows. 1)An intermediate space between closed and opened, such as a garden space faced to public road of housing complex is effective. 2)To make“lived-in feel”in housing complex, a space in perimeter around housing unit to permit resident’s goods such as a planter is necessary.

Though emergency drills should be executed to conceive several conditions, it only gets executed in a single evacuation route. In order to cover this shortcoming, this study make an evaluation on emergency drills by using a pedestrian simulation software, and suggest more better methods of drills. As the result of simulation of the action of drill of Yatsushiro Campus, conclusions are as follows. 1) The result of simulation is quite similar to practical actions of pedestrians, so that the software“SimTread”is useful for predicting the actions. 2) By using“SimTread”, we could find the evacuation method at a much faster time than at present.

This paper reports three temples connected deeply with the lord of the Yatsushiro Castle. There are Annyo-ji temple, Honjyo- ji temple and Syunko-ji temple. Annyo-ji temple is the most luxurious among three temples, because it was built in the early 17th century. In addition, the module is the biggest too. There are splendor and formality in Honjyo-ji temple’s inside in contrast. The form of plan of Syunko-ji temple resembles chief priest architecture of the Zen Buddhism. Honjyo-ji temple and Syunko-ji temple were built according to a law. The law was established in 1668 to control the size of temples. Therefore these roofs are shikoro form and these depth is 6ken. Actually, Syunko-ji temple was rebuilt in the Meiji era. However, the reason to have the characteristic of the law is because it was restored in the figure of the Edo era.

In this investigation, recent climatic change in Japan area is analyzed. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the recent trends of the average temperatures and other weather records(1983-2012). The annual average temperatures in most prefectures are rising at a rate of 3-4℃ /100years and they have a certain degree of relationship with the human activities. It is found that the annual average of the daily maximum, the daily mean and the daily minimum temperatures are rising, and the average amount of solar radiation and the sunshine duration are increasing for 30 years. Further, the annual maximum of the hourly rainfall intensity is also increasing. It is possible that the global warming has affected the climate in Japan.

In 2011, the four nuclear reactors at the First Fukushima nuclear power plant were burst and broken by the great disaster, East Japan Earthquake. In this report, we consider the nuclear power supply. The cost of nuclear power generation is not cheaper than the other generation costs, because the cost does not include the uncertain enormous compensation of serious accident or the processing cost of nuclear waste. An opinion in Japan was surveyed by questionnaire from a generation in Japan, students of 3rd year ,in high schools or national college of technologies. Their opinions about the problem, which we should abolish or continue the nuclear power generation in future, were divided in half and half. It is desirable there is much information from electric power companies to young people on the essential problems of the nuclear power generation. The public debate on the nuclear generation in Japan is still required to the future.

Recently, it is pointed out the importance of students’active learning in the higher education in JAPAN. In the engineer education, there are students in no small numbers who tend to lose their vision. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce the Aalborg PBL model at Aalborg University, Denmark in the Department of Architecture as an excellent example. And by comparing the curriculum with one of our department, the possibilities of introduction of the model to our college for students’ active learning are discussed.

For a purpose of getting a well-understand for the effects of feedback control, there exist several types of the experimental equipment. One of them is a ball and beam system, by which the stabilizing control method for single input single output system can be learned, because it can directly show the effect of control as the balance of beam and location of the ball to target position. In this report, the development of simple experimental equipment of ball and beam using an Arduino compatible micro-computer is described. The advantage of the developed experimental equipment are (1 )small size, (2) low cost, and (3) ease for construction.

The medium-term plans of national college of technology JAPAN for 2nd period says it is very important to educate our students to ensure technology and knowledge as the foundation in order to become a creative engineer in various fields including the manufacturing industry. We propose a display robot project which aims to improve student's social skills in the process of developing the robot. The skill includes technical skills, communication skills and business etiquette and manners. In this report, details of the projects currently in progress are shown and an interim assessment is considered.

In this paper, another method for leading an angle of projection with furthest hitting point of free falls is shown. It would be usually shown in algebraically by differential of formula explaining a horizontal displacement. We show that, it can be calculated by a law of energy conservation and geometric analogy only. It may be useful for understanding of free falls in elementary physics.
