In schistosomiasis japonica we can not always find ova of the parasite. In acute schistosomiasis, it takes about one month to find ova and in chronic cases the discharage of ova is not regular. Accordingly, another method of diagnosis is desirable. An evaluation has been made of intradermal and precipitin tests for diagnosis of the desease.

It has been known that Kirchner's synthetic basal medium (1) contains the necessary nutrients for the growth of acid fast bacilli, i.e. Na2HPO4 and KH2PO4as phosphate, asparagine as nitrogen, and glycerine as carbonic source. Though this synthetic basal medium alone is an excellent medium for acid fast bacilli, it can not grow them submergedly. When mammalian serum is added to it, however, the surface and submerged growth of acid fast bacilli is markedly enhanced. For example, Kirchner's serum synthetic medium is known as an excellent medium for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Furthermore, many investigators have reported that the addition of serum to synthetic media would enhance the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. (2) (3) (4). Recently, Davis and Dubos (5) has reported that the addition of bovine plasma fraction V albumin to sorbitan monooleate synthetic medium was able more markedly to enhance the growth of tubercle bacilli than other media. They assumed that the action of fraction V albumin would enhance the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis as a protective agent in binding with traces of toxic unesterified fatty acids released by the hydrolysis of the sorbitan monooleate. Youmans and Youmans(6) investigated whether one or more fractions presented in the plasma would enhance or not the growth of tubercle bacilli to a comparable or greater degree than that which could be obtained with whole serum, and discussed the effect produced by addition of bovine serum and 12 bovine plasma fractions to a synthetic medium on the subsurface growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. According to the results mentioned above, of the 12 plasma fractions investigated, only one fraction, proantithrombin, could stimulate the growth of the organisms to the same degree as whole serum. The purpose of this paper is to report the effect of bovine serum, especially its albumin fraction, and egg albumin on the stimulation of the growth of acid fast bacilli by addition of bovine serum and egg albumin to the synthetic media.

Oliver-González et al (1), (2), (3), (4) reported the presence of A and B group substances as well as Forssman's antigen in each of Ascaris lumbricoides, Ascaris suum, Triehnella spiralis, Necator americanus, Schistosoma mansoni, Cysticercus cellulosae and Taenia solium. Yamaguchi (5) found the existence of A partial antigen of A group substance and Forssman's antigen in the larva of gnathostoma spinigerum. In 1952 Ota (6) confirmed that AIV partial antigen of A group substance, C group substance and Forssman's antigen were contained in Ascaris Lumbricoides and that both of Ancylostoma duodenale and that both of Ancylostoma duodenale and Taeniarhynchus saginatus had at least AIV partial antigen of A group substance.

The physical growth of school children in Japan for 54 years from 1900 to 1953 was examined by application of the method, reported previously in the “Analytical Study of the growth Gurve.”(1) The materials, taken mainly from the Educational Ministry's School Statistics, were studied by analysing the growth curves for them, particularly the curves tracing the rate of relative increase, the periods of life in which the curves rise to the acme, and the age distribution over those periods. The conclusions reached were as foilows.

Schistosomiasis japonica is a disease prevailing in several districts of Japan. The exact diagnosis hitherto made is based on the discovery of eggs in the patient's feces. It is, however, said that the egg is found in the feces of thepatient in only 70 to 80%(1). After invasion in human body cercariae are carried by the blood stream and reach the portal system and stay there for 4 to 5 weeks until they lay eggs. The eggs are carried by the blood stream and form emboli in the intestine and the liver. In the intestinal wall ulcer is formed by the secretion from the miracidia of the egg and a group of eggs is discharged into the lumen of the intestine. This group of eggs is found in the feces. On the other hand, the other group which forms emboli in the periphery of the liver can be found by needle biopsy of the liver. Needle biopsy of the liver was first introduced by Lucatello (2) and was followed by Schupher (3), Bingel (4) and many others for the purpose of histological investigation or that of fresh cell examination only, but never for the detection of eggs. It came to my mind that by means of the needle biopsy of the liver method the eggs should be found very easily in such an early stage of forming emboli around the liver lobules. For this reason, in a doubtful case, I usually try this method. As soon as a puncture is made a portion of the liver is examined microscopically. By this means I was able to detect eggs far earlier than they were found in the feces. The followings are the examples I have experienced.
